Golf with Dad My favourite golf memory is playing golf with my Dad back in the late 50's and early 60's. Dad always claimed that the best golf was early in the morning. So we would get up before it was light out and hit the course by 6 AM. I wasn't an early riser but every time he woke me up early to play golf, I bounded out of bed and threw on my clothes. And Dad was right - golf in the early morning was glorious - the sun coming up, dew on the grass, quiet and the golf course all to ourselves. He used to call it millionaire's golf because only a millionaire could afford to have a golf course all to himself. Those were wonderful days bonding with Dad and golf was a huge part of the relationship.

KQ!! FORE!!!! The most memorable golf experience was my very first time on the green. I was with the Swiss Chamber and participating in the event with other chambers in June 2005. My flight had a few golf pros, like the Chairman of the AmCham Golf Committee, so it was pretty inimidating at the beginning. I had also brought along a cameraman to take some "kodak" moments throughout the day as I was handling media, and he wanted all the right shots. So he positioned himself to get the right angle, which meant getting in front of the player and off to the right. My boss had gone up before me, and it was his first time too. His shot went up and off to the right, so not too bad of a first shot. My turn was up for my very very first tee off in my life on a course, and I was nervous as heck. I swung, made contact with the ball, however the shot didn't go up, but it did go right...right towards my photographer, missing him only by 10cm! A very memorable first shot.
But the refreshing experience was that the guys with me continued to encourage me, and that offered inspiration to continue with the sport...and so last year, I even organized the Chamber Golf Open, with a golf clinic component for the Special Olympics to provide opportunities for the athletes to train with a PGA pro, which was very cool...and to think it all started with a bad shot!
Since that time, my swing and shot has slowly improved with practice, as it does goes up now, but still goes right at times, which earned me the nickname of KQ ('kan qiu')!...FORE!!!!

Favorite Golf Moment Watching top pros on the final day of the Johnny Walker Open at Pine Valley a couple of years ago. Seeing pros from a few meters away was far more exciting than watching on TV. Pine Valley did a good job hosting the event.

Two...playing with a group of good friends for a week in June every year for the past 25, and Number One...playing with my 80-year old Mother every chance I had.

Summer days As a teacher in New Zealand we have long summer holidays but this particular year my friend and I were training seriously in a rowing crewq so could not go away for a holiday. We decided to visit a different golf course every day play a round then return for training each afternoon. So numerous, varied and cheap are the courses in NZ that we managed this for two solid weeks, driving no more than an hour to get to the courses. A great holiday and we managed to get all the rowing crew out for one day on of the local courses-what a hoot!

Beware the Alligators!!!! I was playing golf in Orlanda & as I approached the 1st tee a sign read "Beware the Alligators". Yep - we read the sign and teed off. We forgot about the warning & on the 11th hole my ball settled just on the edge of the lake. Something jumped, I wet my pants, I survived & my golf swing has had the shakes ever since!!!!

My legal case with Bob Hope I played my slowest game of golf when I was 11 years old at the Royal Victoria Golf Club. A friend and I were caught behind a party of six senior golfers that shared three carts between them.
On the 10th hole, eager to play my second shot, I thought I would just hit a lay up while I waited for the 6 member party to finish on the green.
I underestimated the distance and hit right on to the group. I yelled "Fore" as I watched the retirees duck for cover.
On the next hole, I approached the party and apologized profusely. The first man I came across told me "Son, you are in a lot of trouble. You just hit Bob Hope with your shot. He wants to talk to you".
Not knowing who Mr. Hope was, I cautiously made my way over to a man who looked to be examining a foot injury. The 5 remaining golfers watched closely. Nervously, I said, "Mr. Hope, I am terribly sorry for hitting on to you". He frowned at me and then looked at his friends. He quipped, "You are lucky I am having a good day, otherwise I would sue you". His golf mates and he then broke out in laughter.
Confused and embarrassed I and my friend excused ourselves. The next day at school my friend told everyone the story of how I hit a famous American lawyer and was going to sued.

Good Shot?? I was playing a par 5 at Torrey Pines one day. I had the ball on a ridge about 200 yards from the hole. There were two people on the green but I didn't think I could make it that far so I swung away. Somehow the ball made it to the green and as I approached the two people were staring. I thought at first that they were upset that I took the shot too early but soon realized they had thought I reached the green in two shots! Little did they know it took me about 5 shots to get to the point on the ridge. So, with them watching my putt the pressure was on. My putt went in and the two people congratulated me on my "eagle!" I had to just smile, I won't hear comments like that often...

A beautiful Beijing sunset...:) Sometimes we take a game so seriously. I had just finished work it was one of those rare clear(no visible pollution), warm, quiet Beijing afternoons. It struck me that my 3 year old daughter and I had never golfed together. So off we went to the local course. I must have been misty-eyed because the course looked beautiful. We decided to play just 9 holes, it was the most joyously frustrating ever played by me. The best was playing the ball and then seeing the joy on my daughters face when she would come running with ball in hand to show me she had found it. She had a few chances to putt and the furrowed brow was a joy to watch as she and the caddy conspired to beat me on the green. We ended the final hole as the sun was setting giving everything a warm hue, me with my beer and she with her Sprite. That round stands out as a great "China moment" and a memorable "Dad moment".

Favorite Golf Moment Two years ago I got up early and watched Tiger's chip go in at the 16th, in the final round of The Masters. I yelled for my son to get to get out of bed to see it--luckily, of course, there were many replays. My thoughts at the time were that we just got to see the best there ever will be at the game do something quite magical.
