Liu Yan is a genuine artist among today's flippant and impetuous art circles, moreover under nowadays' numerous and complicated economic situation from which she has always been estranged and keep apart. So that she can be bathed in serenity of her own as to sense and express enjoyably what her heart has perceived from outer world.
“Buried Mists” is one of Liu Yan's two representative series for recent years, in which she provides a clue of a poorly-equipped travelling troupe in gloomy rich-colours and, broken touch of the brush so as to produce what she has come to realize from the thought of drama is but a life and life is like a drama. Her paintings has a deep sense of grievance at men having to “play” their roles in reality resignedly. And, “Isolated Garden” is her another series which expresses the once splendid sites where seemingly still has its soul. What in this series of hers is to reveal the unavoidable abandonment in present social transformation.
Liu Yan's works appear to be grey and dull but have steadfast and stong touch of the brush, in which shows the brokenness after every resplendency and, with its irresistible temptation, guarding us into her lonely spiritual world.
