Many of the players are applied music teachers, band directors and performers but most are highly talented musicians whose daily lives have them working as doctors, lawyers, housewives, computer engineers as well as dozens of other occupations. The common bond among the players is a shared love for making great music at the highest levels of sophistication. Having achieved numerous honors and awards for excellence in performance and service, the HSB's most humbling recognition is the 2004 presentation by the revered John Philip Sousa Foundation of their covted "Sudler Silver Scroll" Award. This prestigious award is reserved for the most outstanding adult bands in the world (juried competition).

Robert McElroy - Artistic Director and Conductor Robert McElroy (Conductor and Artistic Director - The Houston Symphonic Band) is in demand throughout Texas, the United States and North America for his skill, passion, and musicianship in the concert hall as well as in the classroom. His impressive career spans four decades of conducting bands, choirs and orchestras including the Orquestra de Camara of the University of Yucatan in Merida, Mexico, the Fresno Wind Orchestra, the Texas Community College All-State Band, the Texas Private and Parochial School All-State Band (twice) and numerous High School and Junior High School All-Region bands in Texas and nationwide. He is also conductor of Houston's only professional wind ensemble-The Katy Wind Symphony. He has been invited to return to conduct the Community College All-State Band in 2007
