This Chien' Men 23 flagship art space is an intriguing multi-leveled space perfect for smaller group shows and installation. Expect top notch contemporary works from Chinese artists. Be sure to check out the beautiful rooftop space with a great view of south Tiananmen.
Our mission: Preserving in China the outstanding history of contemporary Chinese art and stimulating its continuation. Integrating contemporary art into the urbanization and social progress of China
Our pursuit: To be a dynamic space that fosters and encourages the development of exceptional contemporary Chinese art. To be a platform for international and interdisciplinary exchanges that stimulates and promotes reflection and creativity in contemporary Chinese art and society. To build a bridge between the art community and the public by encouraging meaningful dialogue and interaction between the two groups.
Location: Beijing Center for the Arts is nestled in the southeast corner of CH'IENMEN, only a brief walk away from Tian’anmen Square. With China’s renowned imperial palace or “Forbidden City” just to the north and the historic Qianmen Gate to the south, BCA has become the new landmark in the very heart of the city.
The CH'IENMEN 23 Project: The CH'IENMEN 23 project (former "Legation Quarter" or "LQ") is an integrated premier lifestyle development unlike any other in China today, featuring a diverse range of the finest dining, arts and entertainment all in one convenient and historical location. Behind the project lies the belief of its developer Handel Lee that life is made richer through culture. After his success in the Shanghai life-style project of Three on the Bund, Mr. Lee is dedicated to establish a cultural and lifestyle gathering place in the heart of China’s Capital converging world-leading restaurants, unrivalled event spaces, sophisticated nightclub and lounge venues, luxury retailers, a contemporary art gallery and Beijing's only multi-purpose theatre, embodying contemporary luxury lifestyle.
Architecture and Space: CH'IENMEN 23 is a neo-classical style of compound with impact from contemporary Chinese cultures. Designed by Sid H. Nealy in 1903, it has once served as the U.S. embassy during the Qing dynasty; and now protected by municipal artefact preservation orders. As the soul of CH'IENMEN 23, BCA mainly comprises a double-deck exhibition hall of 1,600sqm; and a 700sqm multifunctional repertory theater – the Black Box with a 8m ceiling (under construction). The two spaces make it possible for BCA to feature all kinds of arts and art-related activities, ranging from contemporary art, music, dance, drama, video, etc.
