This cafe is frequented by a steady stream of expats hungry for quick and dependable American-inspired cuisine. Dishes range from south of the border quesadillas to standard items like cheeseburgers. Customers like to work off the calories at the popular gym upstairs. Don't miss the mozzerella sticks and happy hour specials.

See you at Sunday Brunch!

Reliable cafe-restaurant in a quiet and comfortable setting, too bad they not really have outdoor seating... The burger is always juicy and tasty. A reliable source for a reasonable priced burger, these days when the burger prices go through the roof...

My girlfriend and I went on a Sunday night. The place was pretty dead; luckily, however, this did not affect the quality of the food.
As for appetizers, the onion rings were straight from a down-home restaurant in America - covered in oil, and served with ranch dressing. The nachos were also pretty good, but the salsa left something to be desired. Still, pretty good for an Asian country with few Mexican natives.
I ordered the Texas Smokehouse Burger, which was delicious. Unfortunately, my request for it to be cooked rare was promptly ignored, and I had to suffer through a piece of meat that had undoubtedly done more than its share of time on the flame - an absolute deal breaker for me. It is for this reason that my review is for 4 stars instead of 5.
For desert, we ordered 1 slice of pumpkin and 1 slice of apple pie, respectively. Both were decent - my only complaint is that the pumpkin pie was served hot. Something, for me (as a New England native), that is pure blasphemy.
Overall, though, the experience was thoroughly enjoyable, and we will most definitely be back to try the fish and chips.

How do you screw up a simple order of french toast and eggs. I live right across the street and still it took over an hour to deliver across the street. I can't say they offer the best food in town, but for me, it's the most convenient.

Two days ago, I ordered alot of food from the restaurant from the meat lovers pizza to fish and chips to the american all star burger. The food arrived in under 30 minutes and everything was delicious and fresh. I had ordered food from 3 other western restaurants the previous three days and this was the best of them all.

While it would be kind to say that this restaurant has been on a downhill slide over the last year, the truth is it's been more of a complete free fall. I've lived in the building that the American Cafe is located in for the last 2 years and have steadily watched as the quality deteriorated.
Back in 2006, the American Cafe was practically a second home for me. Being a relatively new expat here in Beijing, it offered a very reasonably priced, tasty meal, in an environment that was both soothing and reminiscent of a dinner back home.
Since then however, it seems there has been a couple changes in management. Also strangely enough, the service and food quality took the most dramatic drop when the most recent foreign managers took over.
Living so close to this restaurant, eating here can sometimes be unavoidable. In the last couple months I've seen some strange things happen. A couple months back, I met some friends there for lunch around noon. We ordered our food before 1215. Finally, 45 minutes later, the first dish, a salad, came out of the kitchen. The friend who ordered the salad starting eating and finished before the next meal came out. This continued until three of the 5 of us had eaten. Finally at 1:45, one of my friends who had also ordered a salad simply couldn't wait anymore because he had a 2 PM meeting. He told the staff to forget about the food, and instead of nodding and agreeing, the foreign manager came running out with the salad in a to go bag. My friend was rather in a hurry at this point and said he had been waiting for over an hour and a half for a salad, and that he wasn't going to pay for it. The manageress said fine, and took the food into the back room... where I think it was recycled.
More recently I dropped by for the French Onion soup. They took my order no problem, but what came back was bizarre. The soup was lukewarm but the bread and cheese were incredible hot! It seemed as if the food had been reheated in a microwave.
Finally, my last encounter at this restaurant came earlier this month when I ordered the BLT. The sandwich looked fine, but after tasting it had a distinctly different flavor. At first I ignored it, thinking I was just being to picky, but after half the sandwich I couldn't eat anymore. Later that night I became violently ill from what I think was bacon that had gone bad.
Please! Bring the quality back up. This used to be one of the more authentic western places in Beijing, but has taken a massive slide.

After much deliberation, as I normally just eat Chinese food in China (excuse the expat blasphemy) I fit American Cafe into my day. As I sit here (the wifi is excellent), I can't help but wonder about the negative experience of the previous reviewer. Perhaps I came on a "hit" day, or perhaps it's because of the hour and I'm the only person here (a fact which I'll admit doesn't bode well in a city of 15 million), but my burger was delicious. Medium, just as I ordered, with fresh fixin's and a nice char (if you'll pardon my Texan roots). My fries were fresh as well, and I didn't taste the re-used oil of previous reviewers. My baked potato on the other hand, was a mess. Topped with what was purported to be chili and cheese, it was dry as yak jerky and about as appetizing. The chili was a hodgepodge of beans and meat, minus that all-important element: spice.
I would come back for their burger, but judging from reviews and my potato, that's about all .

I've been going to this place on and off for the past 18 months or so. I have to say it seems to be on a downward slide. The burgers used to be great, but the last three times I've been there the food has been terrible. The last time the burger was completely burnt on the outside. I'm surprised they had the nerve to serve it up. I sent it back and they promised a new one, but that too was awful. I half suspected they had just scraped the layer of charcoal off the first burger.
I also only ever order the burger because the one time I ordered something different (chicken and croissant - bizarre combination that definititely doesn't work) it was inedible. The onion rings tasted only of re-used oil. Now that the burger has let me down too many times, I won't be going back. Sad.

I actually think it's hit or miss. They do great salads and the fajitas are OK. Breakfast food has been pretty hit or miss (my friends claimed to have gotten sick by the french toast). I sometimes have to wait a looong time to get my food. The bacon though, is fried to a delicious crisp, just the way I like it!

I love their Boston Burger, and service has always been good. Their ambiance could do with some work, though.

Definitely the best burgers in town...the mozzerella sticks are fabulous! Can't really fault the place.

Good meals at a decent price If you miss TexMex, this is a good place to check out. Also, the place for a proper burger in Beijing.

Clean, Quiet hangout One of the nicest, cleanest places in CBD to grab a bite of American... especially if grandma's is wearing on you.
The hamburgers are especially good, arguably the best in Beijing, and the spaghetti and gnocci was quite good. (Not sure if the gnocci is still available)
Their breakfasts are quite nice as well, particularly the steak and eggs. Oh, and the fresh fruit juices are nice too.
They also do catering -- way cool. :-)

Good basic American style food, if you're willing to overlook the waiter at the front picking his nose, which occurred during one visit. Burgers are fine, chicken fingers ok and mozzarella sticks great. Fish and chips tend to be soggy with hardly any real fish.
