Beijing's first Uzbek restaurant boasts a palatial dining room with a decor you can feast your eyes on, as well as great food. Highlights include tasty Russian style salads and Holiday Plov, a fantastic Central Asian rice dish. Attentive service and nightly shows complete the experience.
We have to admit, we weren’t sure what to expect from Uzbek food, but had decided to head to Shash simply to enjoy the restaurant’s aesthetics. Customers walk through an imposing wooden door and darkened entrance, only to step into the breathtaking and somewhat palatial interior. From the towering blue and gold colored ceilings hang ornate chandeliers, with a grand staircase leading from the center of the dining room to the upstairs seating area. From our balcony perch, we felt a little like we were in an elaborate theater, but the photos, swords and hand crafted tapestries on the wall gave the restaurant a Central Asian atmosphere. After having adequately admired the décor, we moved on to the Spring Salad (RMB25), a delicious mix of shredded cabbage, carrots and cucumbers with an excellent vinagrette, and the Zaravshan (RMB30), another tasty Russian-style salad with chicken. The highlight of the meal was the Holiday Plov (RMB45/serving), a filling Central Asian rice dish with a fantastic combination of raisins and chick peas to complement the seasoned rice and tender beef. We finished with the Mutton Kebabs (RMB15 each), a high quality version of chuan’er, made with very savory meat. The well-trained staff hovered a bit but were still very attentive and welcoming. With such a fantastic introduction to Uzbek cuisine and an interior that’s a feast for the eyes, we may well become regulars at Shash.
