This restaurant is a hit with the locals and laowai. The Beijing duck is delicious, as are the other traditional Chinese dishes. They even brew their own beer. Best of all is Huajia's decor and layout. The main location on Donzhimen Nei's dining room has high ceilings and subtle lighting and a great outdoor hutong courtyard dining patio.

Dissenting opinion here. The "home brewed" dark beer was awful. I ordered a Yanjing just to get the sweetness out of my mouth. The rest of the food was unspectacular, though we didn't order any duck. The seafood stew was terrible, consisting mainly of sea cucumber and octopus. It just fell short of expectation.

This is also the place where I take visitors to try Beijing food. You'll be sure to impress them. Their Beijing duck is just right, not too fatty, yet very tasty. The kitchen is very neat and it's always a nice show for visitors to watch how Beijing duck is prepared from their open kitchen.
They have 2 nice courtyards which are more quiet than the main dining place: one in the north (you need to cross a hutong) and one on their east (very upscale and you are sure to impress your guests!). They also have a non-smoking area upstairs but it doesn't look very traditional.

After reading the reviews i really had some expectations. The atmosphere (guijie), really is nice, especially for visitors on the first or second day. Nice was that they gave us a "private" room for free. The food was okay but nothing special. Some fried seafood dish came with exactly two shrimp, complaining about it didnt help. The fried noodles were really bad. The duck and the cold chicken salad were good though. Everyone around us was drinking Yanjing, they told us they dont have any, but other tables still had it coming.
NIce atmosphere, unspectacular food, i will hardly go again.

The courtyard Huajia is always a very good choice, it's a Beijing version of our beloved "Bierhallen": crowded, rude staff, rustic food, and always "renao"!

You can mix the fried beef and the broccoli w/garlic to make something that tastes like the American Chinese food dish beef and broccoli.

soooo crowded! we went to the one at guijie. had to wait for around 45 mins before we finally got our table. but we were satisfied with our table. it was in the middle of the siheyuan. good food. really like all of the things that we ordered.

I think this is an excellent place. But it is important to go to the one on 235 Dongzhimennei Dajie as this is the original one with best ambience. The others are nothing spectacular in way of design and non-descript. A must try is the spicy crayfish, yummy! Also try the jellyfish salad in citrus dressing (perfect crunchy) and any of the traditional Beijing and Sichuan staple food. Great place to take guests from overseas for an introduction to Beijing. They will love the hustle and bustle and of course the food. :-)

There are two Yi Yuan in Beijing. Which one is off Gui Jie? It is my favorite place to take visitors in Beijing. The food is excellent and they have the best settings for newbies. Let me know! Also, do they have a website or email address? How can I get in touch with them?
