Ambiance is the star of the show at this lakeside establishment, perfect for a special date or one time splurge. Its three levels, the top of which is open to the sky, look like they came out of a contemporary Asian interior design book. Try the red perch, an updated favorite of Ming Dynasty emperors, as well as the restaurant's other specialties, Yunwu Tea Shrimp and Stick Rice and Duck Served in Bamboo.
A newly opened intimate restaurant over looking the West bank of Houhai, this highly romantic and picturesque venue was made to take your breath away.
It has three levels, each uniquely designed, and stages meant for live performances (on the occasion I went, it was Jazz). The top floor is said to be sky-lite under the stars, but I didn't get a chance to see it, so whoever next gets the chance to go up, please reaffirm or correct me.
There is no doubt the main objective and goal of the restaurateurs was ambiance and environment. That you cannot get enough of. I couldn't stop looking around at all the detail in design. A creative spin on Asian modernity. Stuff straight out of a contemporary Asian interior design book.
Since Ken de Rouge spent so much effort on design, its service is still needs a little polishing. It is evident that it is not run by a foreign standard of 5-star quality; but I still give them an A for effort. I believe they'll get better as they gain more experience.
This restaurant was designed as a 5-star destination, and no surprise, it comes with a 5-star price. On the night I went they thankfully had a special menu priced at 488 per couple, however we found out the usual set menu that night was 888 per couple. I'm not exactly sure whether they have a-la-carte menu, but I think you can expect it to ring you up somewhere in that range.
The food quality was satisfactory, even quite delicious. The meat was very tender and the soup and salad were made with elegance. The portions, going along with the 'high-class' theme, were indeed small.
In all, it was a pleasant experience, and is an exceptional place to take a date who likes to be romanced and overwhelmed with ambiance. I think it will be extraordinarily beautiful on a summer night, or at sunset if you get a seat by the window overlooking Houhai.
