Two floors underground and housed in a former bar, this isn't your typical cake shop, but the sweets are delicious. There's a changing selection of fruit and cream tarts here, and while prices are quite high, the slices are huge and ingredients top quality.
Piece of Cake
Two floors underground and housed in a former bar, Strawberry Butterfly isn’t exactly the cutesy cake shop you might imagine. Sure, the waitresses are in adorable maid-esque outfits, but all the seating is bar-style and there’s a massive fish tank looming in the middle. There is no menu—rather, you look at the daily options and choose a slice. The strawberry tart (¥150) may seem overpriced, but it’s absolutely incredible. It’s a multi-layer masterpiece overflowing with whipped cream and cream cheese studded with strawberries on top. There’s also sponge and strawberries in the middle to keep the structure from completely collapsing. The cream cheese gives this cake a slightly sour kick to complement the strawberries, an exquisitely sweet Japanese breed. The beautifully decorated banana and strawberry tart (¥70) is a great choice for chocolate lovers. The dark chocolate base sets off the fruit and whipping cream layers, but you can definitely detect the cheaper variety of strawberry used. The mixed fruit tart (¥60) has a heavy buttery base and a thin layer of almond creme cut with custard. The fruit on top is seasonally selected and is very fresh and flavorful. There is a drink menu with coffee, juice and a selection of domestic and imported teas, and Champagne will also be on the menu by the time you read this.
