Decked Out

3.5/5 Stars

Open just two months, Cabare already feels like one of those go-to restaurants where we know we’re guaranteed a good meal—like a high-end version of Annie’s. The Mediterranean-style eatery is situated at the entrance of Solana’s Bar Street, and boasts a private lakeside patio that’s perfect for enjoying the fall weather.

Lovers of Spanish ham will definitely want to the try the jamon iberico (¥140/50g). Each slice comes wrapped around a thimbleful of alfalfa and sprinkled with a delicious vinaigrette, making for a perfect bite. Equally appetizing are the spicy oyster shots (¥42). Each glass comes with one oyster, swimming in a blend of diced garlic, tomatoes and other goodies. The surf and turf platter here (¥188) is a combination of beef, tiger prawns and saffron risotto. Though slightly overcooked for our taste, the beef was full-flavored and paired particularly well with the rosemary sauce. The tiger prawns were fresh and tender, and the saffron rice was scrumptious. Our tuna steak (¥98), though relatively tasteless on its own, was greatly enhanced by the accompanying béarnaise.

The highlight of the evening came with the arrival of the dessert platter (¥75). We found the trio of chocolate mousse cake, strawberry rhubarb trifle and poppy seed parfait with berry coulis an unbeatable combo, much like the three musketeers. While the first two need no explanation, the homemade poppy seed ice cream is an absolute must-try, if only for curiosity’s sake.
