Scarlett wine bar & restaurant opens its doors on the 8th of April 2009 in Beijing. The venue offers various wines at a reasonable price and goes back to basics in terms of cuisine by offering a wide rage of simple food with taste and quality for the right price!

Scarlett is definitely poised to be the latest meeting point for young executives who like to have fun and chill-out.

More than 80 different wine labels, combined with one of Beijing’s largest cheese selections and cold cuts, daily specials, tapas and legendary burgers all available on a stylish European-style menu.

French Direction


The sounds of live French accordion music met us as we walked into Scarlett to try the new summer menu. The atmospheric, enjoyable music is only offered every Tuesday, but it pairs perfectly with the French direction that the food offerings have also taken.


The menu is the most appealing, and probably the most French, we’ve seen at Scarlett. If you’re only going to order one thing, it should be the beef tartar (¥128). The very fresh meat is chopped by hand, and mixed with onion, pickles, Worcestershire sauce and capers for a mustardy, refreshing taste. The goat cheese salad (¥68), one of the new salads on offer, comes with delicious goat cheese toasts, sweet and savory caramelized onions, great bacon, tangy apple, lettuce and a unique shallot dressing. The French onion soup (¥48) is some of the city’s best, with a beef-based broth and a large, cheese-covered toast. The bouillabaisse (¥78), a soup from Marseilles, packs a generous mix of seafood and a richly flavored broth. Seafood also features prominently in the main courses, with a good range of fish dishes. The sea bass (¥118) is a large portion of fish atop a fennel ragout and herb risotto. The risotto is good but not exceptional, and the combination of tomato and fennel creates a tang that verges on metallic. But the fish is good, and the white wine butter sauce it comes with is excellent, a real culinary treat when eaten together with the streaks of pesto that garnish the plate.


Desserts (¥58 each) are pretty standard. We tried the parfait—basically a cloud of frozen whipping cream in a delicious orange soup. It’s a little like a melted-creamsicle, but in a good way, and it’s perfect for summer evenings.
