The cozy atmosphere and vast library make this restaurant/cafe the perfect place to enjoy excellent and authentic home style French cuisine served up by the Parisian management. Curl up by the fireplace in the winter and bask in the sunshine of the open terrace when it's warm.

Le Petit Gourmand has enticed French and Western expatriates with its alternative to fine-dining French cuisine, which can often be intimidating and snooty with its well-presented but minute portions. Gourmand serves large (French size not US size) portions of home-style french cuisine.
With a great selection of daily blackboard specials and the standard menu, the Mauritius chef trained under a 3 star Michelin chef, knows how to make each morsel perfect for students, romantic couples, businessmen and tourists. Styled like a library with actual books one can check out and a cozy lit veranda filled with greenery, Gourmand has the atmosphere of home, albeit a stylish home.
Chilled French beer and drinks like Hot-Spiced Wine, made of grilled almond, lemon, orange peel and cinnamon and side spoon of sugar are great starters to the meals. A must order is the Escargot, smooth with an intense pulsating garlic flavor. The sauce of olive oil and melted cheese it is satiated with is magnificent and wonderful for mopping up with the equally impressive freshly baked on the premises white bread- traditionally crusty and crunchy just like in France.
The Pan- Fried Goose Liver with caramelized napes and drizzled with balsamic sauce is another must. Placed on fried bread the goose is moist and succulent with an astounding contrasting taste when combined with the tart and spicy caramelized napes. The balsamic sauce was also perfect to dip the bread in.
Even the house red wine (VDP and) is reminiscent of France (and even bottled in France), with its medium tannin which finely adapts to the dishes. Surprisingly, Gourmand is famous for its couscous. The Maragese Couscous is served with home-made sausage, petite but juicy and chewy, and fried pepper and vegetable soup. The mild and light couscous which you would just love to toss and toss and observe its fluffy texture, is topped with spicy Harissa paste and then generously drizzled with the vegetable soup, and eaten with the sausage and eggplant. It was a fun presentation and interesting combination, but making it dry and a little bland for my preferences.
The Rib-eye steak with purple sauce included fatty cuts but was nicely and enthusiastically peppered leaving a aromatic taste though was served too cold. Gourmand is the only restaurant to do BBQ all year round, and one should take advantage of it this winter and have the meat barbequed. The home-made French fries were also pleasant, not too salty but plump and light with a slight crunch to them. For dessert, the hot chocolate, a secret recipe and the only ingredient I can reveal is that Cadbury chocolate is used is a replica of traditional French hot chocolate, and a well needed addition. The Café Latte is exquisite. The Tiramisu is catered to those who desire less potent variations and has only a slight taste of coffee or alcohol, but one should try to the Upside Down Apple Tart, for which any proceeds go to an NGO to buy heaters for schools in China. The Floating Island custard was spongy yet fluffy and served with delicious sweet milk one could simply gobble up. To finish the meal do try the Pear Brandy or Charmeuse one of the oldest drinks in France, and potent with 55% alcohol yet sweet and thus dangerous.
At around 200-300 rmb per person, Le Petit Gourmand is a great place to get high quality French food in a warm environment and leave satisfied. In fact one will leave feeling almost loved and over-fed, just like if one was at Mama’s home for dinner.

I totally agree-this place offers good food for the price and an accommodating, laid-back atmosphere that can either be formal enough for a date or business dinner, or casual enough for hacking away at a laptop for hours on end. Even when someone puts on a horrendous soundtrack on repeat for hours (which for some bizarre reason is often the case), the staff will happily change it or turn the sound down if you ask. Love this place.

Probably the most consistently excellent mid-range restaurant in Beijing. Service, food, cleanliness; none of it ever seems to slip. Atmosphere is perfect for tap-tapping away on your laptop, but just as suitable for a date or a business meeting. Rare is the place that strike that kind of balance.

@leemack I tried the Cheese fondue as well and it was very good, they even propose to put 2 eggs at the end to finish it, which is a tradition. J'ai cru passer un moment en Savoie! I will try again without any hesitation.

Was very much looking forward to trying to Cheese Fondue (RMB220) and did so last night. It was disappointing. Not cheesy enough and the cheese had an aftertaste which my dining companion could only articulate as "vaguely alcoholic." We did get through the whole thing, but would never order it again. The toasted bread chunks that came with it were fine and were refilled without charge.

The bass fish dinner for the evening was quite excellent. Other than that, the rest of the food was average - foie gras, salmon, french onion and crepe...

In one word: Exelent

i didn't get a coffee or glass of wine with my set menu. i also only got 2 courses, although i thought that the 65 got you three. maybe i read the sign wrong?
relatively well-lit, good book selection, and pretty nice staff (although one guy attempted to kick me out once i think by saying that each person has to order over 30RMB or something to be able to stay? what???). also, they didn't use real baguette bread for their croque monsuier. they used 2 slices of white bread. and not just any white bread, SWEET CHINESE WHITE BREAD. totally not authentic.
also, no good drink selection. nothing cheap and good for getting so you can just stay and work. if there were any other places in sanlitun with free wifi i don't think id come back here

They have vin aux épices. They have delicious cheese platters. They have a wide selection of books that go from chickflick paperbacks to city guides (making a detour at most classics). They have good coffee. They have croque monsieur. They have a terrace. They have a wood burning stove.
If someone needs more reasons to go, I'll be glad to list them, but I believe those seven suffice.

They have the wood-burning stove fired up on the back patio. There is NOTHING I like more than sitting by the fire on a cold Beijing evening.

I still remember the first time I came here about two years ago. Their menu card was a book - they had it all, at relatively low quality. Now, their menu card is smaller, but their quality way higher. Food is good, some even great. Also, the interior is very cosy. I especially like the fireplace (yes, a real one with real wood and all.. ;)) and their big window front. A great place to come and work (WLAN) or take your beloved one to for a dinner in (relaxed) style. Nice place, big improvement over the years!

The food is really fantastic. We went there twice in two weeks. Actually I think one of their specialties is their couscous, which you rarely find in other French bistros in town. Le foie gras is superb. Choose to sit on the balcony if you like to be left alone, as the waitress in charge of the area does not come to see you very often.

Excellent lunch set menu. With a cofee or a glass of wine included. I love the new decoration and the atmosphere, especially on the veranda with the fireplace
