This restaurant serves up a fusion of Taiwanese and Thai cuisine. Expect Thai classics like papaya salad as well as southern Chinese favorites on the menu. But we recommend the pineapple and seafood fried rice wholeheartedly—the perfect balance of flavors and ingredients.
Tropical Tango
Kid Tueng offers a new twist to fusion: Taiwanese and Thai, or tai-tai. Many of their dishes are southern Chinese favorites done well, such as the fragrant, soft meatballs with broccoli (¥28) and one of the city’s best versions of three cup chicken—juicy, rich chunks of chicken entwined in pungent Thai basil leaves and cooked in a light, sweet sauce (¥38). There are Thai classics, like cold papaya and squid salad (¥38) or a rather thick tom yam soup (¥38). And then there are lush, tropical dishes that seem to belong to both places (or neither). We’d never had shredded duck squares in sweet chilli sauce before (¥38), but they were a solid, meaty contrast to the lightness of the southeast Asian dishes. Best of the lot was the pineapple and seafood fried rice (¥38). Fried rice is commonplace, but a really good one balances every single ingredient, and we felt this one was almost perfect. The downside to Kid Tueng is their frustratingly hard-to-find location in Chaowai SOHO’s glass and steel jungle.
