    East Wine Cellar is not at all what we were expecting. The concept sounds all too familiar, and not in a good way. It’s a multi-story complex with a high-end wine cellar, both Chinese and French food, and a cigar bar. It’s also owned by Hebei investors, designed locally in a Renaissance/Gothic European style, and located next to bunch of seedy looking KTVs and “man spas” decked out in neon. But somehow the décor totally works, the food—both Western and Eastern—is good, and the whole place is actually pretty classy.


    We’ve seen our fair share of botched European-style décor in Beijing, but East pulls it off. The wine cellar area even has a legit woody, musty smell. The wallpaper is pretty, and various pieces of Chinese porcelain complement the Western-style furniture really nicely. The main dining room has lovely seating, and hand-painted murals that look like Elizabethan tapestries. An outdoor courtyard area will be beautiful in summer.


    The food is light and delicate, leaning to southern Chinese styles. The European dishes are similarly light and pleasant, and the cuisines complement rather than clash. The tea soup (¥58) offers a balanced, delicious flavor. The cold tofu skin wraps (¥58) are even better than the ones at Xuxian Lou. The vinegary jellyfish (¥58) has great flavor and texture. On the French side, the red wine foie gras (¥128) is sliced thinly and served with a sweet sauce. Black pepper beef ribs (¥158) are heartier but still tender and delicate. The restaurant is high-end, but the food is priced reasonably enough so that you’ll have money for wine. There’s a selection of around 1,000 bottles, focusing on Old World. You’ll find all the most famous, expensive stuff, but there are around 200 wines in the ¥400-600 price range. Only the house wine, though, is under ¥400 a bottle.
