The paint on the walls is peeling, the tables are cracked and the bamboo along the back wall is not real. The sound of the songbird and chirp of the crickets is however authentic… and so to is the food. A real local ‘Beijing’ food shop usually full of local business people (and now one white guy).
We had chicken with peanuts, spring onions and dried red chilli, pork with green pepper and fresh chilli and green beans with mushrooms all of which were delicious. Can’t tell you what the sauces were, the menu is in Chinese and nobody speaks English. On my third visit I even scored a smile from the ‘waiter’/owner... and also from the chef. The price for three of us RMB 36. If you do venture into this place best learn how to say "just feed me" in Chinese or take some Chinese friends with you as I did. I have only been for lunch, not sure about going for dinner.
Great food, great fun and a place to go if you are tired of the high brow stuff, wonderful. Oh and the boss uses an abacus to add up the bill.
