City Weekend Says

Traditional Chinese exterior and an exotic, Indian subcontinental feel invites diners to this laid-back hutong Indian restaurant in Gulou. Most of the menu is of the rich, North Indian variety, with a full selection of tandoori as well as naan breads. There are performances on Friday and Saturday nights, but don't go running for the door--the music never gets too loud, and the lone dancer is always elegant, never annoying.

This understated hutong restaurant has a full menu of familiar Indian dishes, but shines with their wide selection of Tandoori choices. The Pudhina fish tikka (¥68) particularly stands out. Marinated with mint and spinach, these juicy chunks of grilled salmon are worth the rather steep price. Another great grill option is the malai chicken tikka (¥58), flavored with minced cashews, yogurt and Parmesan cheese.

Raj also has several familiar curry-based offerings. The butter chicken (¥58) is spicier than others we've had in Beijing, but smooth and creamy nonetheless. Scoop it up with the cheesy paneer naan (¥22). The chicken biriyani (¥58) is wonderfully aromatic, but it wasn't as tasty as the smell led us to believe. Don't forget to wash it all down with their sweet and spicy masala tea (¥15).

Service is quick, quiet and polite, and the manager is happy to explain dishes in detail. While there is dancing, it's rather subdued compared to other Indian places around town. If you can, snag the comfy corner couches, although you won't be able to see the dancer very clearly--which may be a plus for some. In April 2011, the upstairs pavilion will be open for business, inviting customers to dine a mere 100 meters away from the Drum Tower.
