Mangia Bene
Opened by veteran restaurateur Dr. Luigi Azzaro, who owns eateries in Brunei, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia, the city’s newest Italian restaurant is raising the bar for fine dining and quality service in Beijing.
For starters, we recommend the mixed antipasto (¥88), a trio of Sicilian green olives, pickled vegetables and fresh tuna that’s lightly fried and marinated in extra virgin olive oil for two months before serving. The mixed focaccia (¥88), baked with flour from an Italian farmer in Mongolia and topped with smoked salmon, parma ham and tomatoes, is also a must.
The assorted cheese platter (¥198) includes two types of pecorino, provolone, parmesan and creamy fresh mozzarella. Save for the parmesan, which comes from Italy, the cheeses are made by the same Mongolian-based Italian farmer to guarantee freshness and flavor. Meanwhile, soup enthusiasts will love the red onion soup (¥68) made with onions marinated in Italian marsala wine and lamb and beef stock. The tender Zisa beef filet (¥188), cooked according to a Sicilian recipe, reminds us why we could never be vegetarian, and the royal salmon (¥198) makes eating healthy easier than ever.
The decadent tiramisu (¥68) is made completely from mascarpone cheese that’s hand-whipped into sweet surrender. The homemade gelato (¥18 for two scoops) is also excellent.
Wine lovers should stop by for what we are told is the most extensive selection of Italian wines in Beijing. Diners can tour the wine cellar and purchase limited edition designer wines made by the likes of Valentino and Versace. And don’t worry about driving home: Bacco will happily call a cab and send you anywhere within the Third Ring for free.
