Hidden Gem

Last week, we visited Italian Cottage for the first time, but we’ve been eating their food at least once a week for almost a year, thanks to their dependable, efficient and free delivery service. The actual restaurant, a cozy spot tucked away in a beautiful courtyard behind Silk Street No. 2, exceeded our expectations with its tasteful décor and excellent service, and we were delighted to find that the food tastes even better when not eaten out of plastic to-go containers. Our all-time favorite is their Tortellini con Spinacci e Ricotta (RMB38), served in a delicious tomato sauce that’s best enjoyed when sponged up with their stellar Garlic Bread (RMB12). The Chinese family-run restaurant also has excellent salads for very reasonable prices. One of Beijing’s hidden gems, Italian Cottage is perfect for nights when you’re too tired (or lazy) to go out or to cook, but the pleasant little restaurant is also well worth a visit. - Sienna Parulis-Cook

I have been ordering from Italian Cottage since they opened - I used to order from their other restaurant, Franco's, but the brother at Franco's told me to start ordering from Italian Cottage because the food was better. The two restaurants are owned by some Chinese brothers, and the family delivers, waits tables, and cooks all the meals. The Italian Cottage spagetti with meatsauce has been a staple in my diet, at a deliverable 28 kuai. Everything is really excellent food for excellent prices. Be warned, however, that the pizza is not recommended. Other than that, dining at the actual restaurant is a treat, and the two sisters that work there (also part of the family) are really cute. This place is better than Annie's, without a question. Lock and load those phones.

I eat the Spinach Ricotta Tortellini here every week, and I'm really going to miss it when I leave Beijing. The salads here are great, and I love their balsamic vinaigrette dressing and also their garlic bread, which is perfect when used to eat the extra tomato sauce on the tortellini. This place is a lot like Annie's in that it's a pretty inexpensive Italian restaurant with decent food cooked by Chinese chefs. Unfortunately the pizza at Italian Cottage isn't the best - I still order from Annie's for that - but the tortellini and the free delivery are the best! When I finally went to the restaurant, I was overwhelmed by how nice the waitresses/owners were and they made me feel REALLY sad that I was leaving Beijing and wouldn't be able to keep on living off of Italian Cottage.

A small, cosy and simple restaurant hidden in the beautiful courtyard of silk2. It can be a little bit tricky to find it, when you are going for the first time. At the intersection of Dongdaqiao and Gunaghua, head east to the end of the Silk 2 building, where you turn right and right again to get into the courtyard... When female ;-) or for some other reason have no sense of directions just call them, they will guide you... yep, the service is terrible friendly.

The food is very decent and inexpensive. Of special notice are the perfectly cooked al dente spaghetti. I am not sure why the people above don't like their pizza, it is pretty decent too. IMHO the pizza is as good as at Annies or The Tree and compared to the later it is a lot cheaper... but who cares about pizza anyway, since intelligent design created the noodle!
