Royal Feast

Located in the upscale re-incarnation of the Chi'enmen 23, Ristorante Sadler is the latest restaurant opened by celebrity Italian chef Claudio Sadler. We began the evening with GM Gian Fusetto, a knowledgeable and affable host who picked wine pairings from their extensive listing to accompany our meal. The muted ambiance and neutral interior allowed the presentation and quality of the product to shine, while service was as gracious as was expected. To start, the sautéed tiger prawn with pancetta (¥190) was flavorful and perfectly prepared, compared to the uneven seasoning on the tuna tartare (¥200). The pasta course was stellar but it was the risotto in a beer reduction with goat cheese and onions (¥180) that stole the show. We were divided on whether the dentex (red snapper) entrée (¥220) was overly fishy, but agreed the fava bean and almond encrusted lamb chop (¥320) was perfectly tender and delicious. To finish, we found the Naples sponge cake (¥100) especially rum-flavored, yet the warm tiramisu served with coffee ice cream (¥95) was a universally enjoyed twist on the traditional sweet. The ice cream tasted like a wonderful reincarnation of a shot of espresso - just the perfect way to sum up the evening.

I revisited Sadler again after over a year and was completely blown away by the precision of each course, from the champagne risotto to the deep fried procini served with a delicious thick taleggio sauce, finishing with a tiramisu topped with a smattering of cocoa beans. This restaurant now moves up the rank to my favourite Italian restaurant in Beijing.

Came here today for lunch, food always top quality, we had luch set menu. Started with bread selection, very nice rosemary focaccia, squid macaroni was beautifully done, and my veal cheeck with smoked mashed potato.... unbelievable.... it is worth to try! Finished meal with homemade panacotta, with berries couli. What a Nice Lunch treat!

One of the best places in Beijing to dine. The wine list was exhaustive. The service good. Food was perfect. The sphagetti ,the appetisers, the dessert, everything went well. Only thing is too expensive to visit often. But for special occassions its fine.

Visited Sadler two weeks ago on a business dinner. Appetizer's veal carpaccio was delicately well prepared. The squid gnocchi on the other hand, tasted like well... squid, with none of chewy texture of typical gnocchi--not very impressive.

For the main course, we had a sea urchin pasta and a seaweed risotto. The risotto was nice, but what they meant by 'seaweed' was actually just a few thin strips of laver (the kind they use in Japanese cuisine). The sea urchin pasta was very nice, full of flavor and creamy, but the portion was rather small. In fact, all the portions were rather small... but that's typical of fine dining.

They had attentive service and gave us free chocolate/sweets to finish off the meal. Decent Italian fare, but I'm not convinced if it is really worth the price.

Lucky to have seats duiring Mr.Claudio Sadler's recent visit in town! The restaurant itself was beyond our expectations with chic atmosphere and kind, attentive service. Beautiful cuisine of Sadler reminded me of some Joan Miro's paitings. Not heavy to my stomach at all, while each dish has a delightful surprise. Clean cuisine based on fresh ingredients in high quality. Interesting wine list. Wide range of tasty breads. Try Spaghettini with sea urchin Milanese

The only thing we missed was that we forgot to check private/vip rooms upstairs...

I've already visited some Italians in town inclucing Baloro,Cepe and others, however only here,Sadler, made me feel some "differences" in a good meaning. Highly recommended in Beijing. Definitely go back on my earliest occasion, it'd be lovely if we can dine at Chef's Table in front of the kitchen!! (am not sure how can we make a reservation for that exclusive space??)

Good but nothing impressive. The garden is a beautiful place for an afternoon tea.

The service was extremely friendly and attentive, although there was a mix-up with our drink order; we ended up with two glasses of wine and no coffees instead of two coffees and one glass of wine. No matter.
We initially went for the mix-and-match brunch special, but this turned out to be simply basic pasta and pizza...something we could order anywhere in town... so we opted for the regular menu's pasta mains instead. The food was delicious, although the portions were a bit on the small side, and each dish was beautifully presented. At one point the chef came out to greet us, which was a nice touch. Overall, I'd say that this restaurant tries very hard, but there was nothing about the dishes that really differentiated them from those at any other good Italian restaurant, other than the presentation and the high price tag.
This would be a fine choice for a business dinner or a first date, because the food is familiar and comforting and would not detract from the conversation, but we were hoping for something a bit more exotic, and we definitely expected better brunch options. One final note -- there is outdoor seating! That was definitely a plus.

Usually, I give places 2-3 tries before forming a final opinion, as anyone can get lucky and everyone can have a bad day.

However, this restaurant disappointed me so much that I'm not even sure I want to give it another go. A small group of us went there the other night, and were all astounded that a Michelin star Chef would let an establishment run like this. The service was extremely slow - even though the place was far from full, the food was not any better than we could have ordered from an average Italian restaurant, and the "living room like" atmosphere was subconsciously pushing all the customers to keep their conversations to a whisper.

The 2 things saving this restaurant are the beautiful legation quarter settings, and the very friendly manager.

Located in the lovely complex of Chianmen, but compared to the other restaurants nearby it's not as enticing to go for a second time. Entrance is very nice and was led through several lounge type of rooms, all empty. Final dining room had very subdued designed furniture; not a romantic atmosphere but bright and airy. Very attentive staff. However the food was lacking- the lobster ravioli was odd and they just tried too much with innovation by foaming everything. Good to try once or twice, but just to check it out not to return for the food.
