Shiro Matsu is temporarily closed but will move to a new location in 2010.

This avant garde Japanese restaurant combines slick design with earthy tones. Dark wood, bamboo walls and high ceilings lend the space an air of grandeur. The seafood is flown in from Tokyo's Tsukiji market, and specialties include “sosaku” edomae sushi, tataki sushi, sashimi and taraba crab tempura. Meat lovers will also be tempted by the Australian Wagyu on offer.

Surreal Sushi

Conceived and designed by Hong Kong restaurateur David Yeo, Shiro Matsu is an impressive addition to both Japanese cuisine and cutting-edge design in Beijing. The majestic glass cube that houses the Legation Quarter’s latest delight is crafted with the utmost attention to artistic detail, delicately melding natural and industrial elements: Twilight filters through its towering glass walls, candles hang from 25 ft.-high ceilings, glass walkways cut into the black granite floor to reveal sand gardens, and the earthy tones of a bamboo ceiling give way to a wall-sized video installation of bubbling technicolor paints. We began our meal with delectable bites of asparagus wrapped in bacon (RMB45, not including a 10 percent service charge) before moving on to sashimi prepared at what may be Beijing’s longest sushi bar. We started with the hamachi (yellow tail) sashimi, which at RMB40 for two pieces is also Shiro Matsu’s lowest price sashimi. The hamachi’s fresh oils and supple meat dissolved on our palates in an eruption of tastes. The o-taro (fatty tuna) sashimi was equally impressive though less of a bargain at RMB190 for two pieces. We followed these with a hot dish: grilled black cod fillet marinated with saikyo miso paste (RMB188), a flavorful surprise on a menu based around sashimi, sushi and tempura. More adventurous diners may also want to sample the deep fried fugu pufferfish (RMB328) by Shiro Matsu’s chef Kazuaki Yakuwa, who trained for years to cut and prepare Japan’s most notorious delicacy. Whether looking for adventure or just a sumptuous Japanese meal, be sure to indulge in one of Shiro Matsu’s mouthwatering desserts. We recommend the hazelnut ice cream (RMB28).

We went to Shiro Matsu recently to find what i would consider the best and most contemporary Sushi Restaurant I have experienced so far since living in Beijing. I had read the other reviews here so was a little worried but I have to say they either went on a bad day or didn't really order the right dishes. The day we went there was about 7 other tables in the dining room so the staff seemed quite busy when we arrived but the service was still fast and efficient. The place is really beautiful and has a great design and the large round booths were very romantic to sit in together which we loved.

The Tataki sushi platter that we ordered was delicious with great combinations of seafood and even one topped with seared goose liver. The rice was warm and wrapped in super thinly sliced cucumber with each of the 12 pieces with different toppings and looking fantastic.

Following this we chose some of our regular Japanese favorites such as Tempura which was light and crispy and very fresh tasting with a perfect sauce to accompany it. Next was the sea bass with miso paste which was sweet and cooked to perfection and we shared this along with the tenderloin beef fillet with mustard sauce. last but not least we ordered some very simple miso soup which I found to have the best flavor of any miso soup I have had anywhere, even better than in Japan, warm and with lots of seaweed and japanese mushrooms. No room for dessert so we just finished with some more tea and headed off to Hex Bar for an after dinner cocktail which finished off our romantic dinner for two perfectly!

Went on a Thursday night at 9:30PM and the place was empty, with a staff of like 5 standing around. Really it's a beautiful place- from the candle-lite entrance and the dining area with its high ceilings. I went with a special platter of unspecified sushi, 10 pieces for a little under 500RMB. Out came an array of different sushi- foi gras, sweet egg white, medium-rare beef, topping sushi rice, along with some expected fare such as salmon and such. It was interesting. Nice place, but it was empty the whole time!

Shiro Matsu. I had high expectations (well I heard so much about it before it opened in Beijing)... which I had to quickly then drastically lower it to say "Hatsune" level i.e. mid-range. Arrived there at 10:20pm and was told by a waitress that they are closed. Hmmm...until another lady decided to take us in (i guess the first lady was eager to close and go home!). Service was good (probably because we made a point to speak to the person-in-charge)... Food was average, wine list for good, ambience was nice. Maybe we arrived late that only two other diners were there... Don't think I'd ever return though...

Aiyayai! This was a let down!

OK, let's start with the goooood: 1) Lovely mocktails, both the green tea passion fruit and luscious lychee were yummylicious! Tho, I was hoping for a real lychee :D

2) Couldn't really point a finger at service... some waitresses were really good, some were rather "clueless" e.g. didn't prepare the table / cutleries before serving dessert.

3) Now food! Sashimi quality, roll, salad... Honestly nothing to shout about, and the predictable dessert menu didn't make my heart skip a beat - I'd still go back to Shota Muni and Haiku/ Hatsune for good food & presentation!

2.5 stars!

Hmm....where to start....Friday night at 8pm , only two other people in the restaurant. Filled up to four at its peak. Sashimi was OK, not earth shattering. Foie Gras satidsfactory, soft shell crab salad could do with a lot more work. Sea Bass nothing special. Again, such an incredible location but food you wouldn't write home to mum about. Dessert from Agua was good. If not for the fact I had great company, and was completely engaged in laughs and discussion, I would have spent more time finding toe food so so. Shame. Great decor. Looks like it should be something really special

I went to Shiro Matsu for a dinner celebration last week. It is a truly stunning restuarant with glittering velvet round botths , high ceilings and an enormous trippy screen. We had great sushi sashimi and the chicken teriyaki was to die for! highly recommend!
