City Weekend Says

This contemporary restaurant, from owner of SALT Gaby Alves, centers around ceviches, as well as other Peruvian-inspired dishes like causas and empanadas. The chic, industrial atmosphere draws a young trendy crowd with money to spend. Don't miss the delicious churros.

Contributor Description

Drawing on the ages old traditions of ceviche - fruits of the sea delicately seared in citrus and perfectly balanced with fresh herbs and flavors - TERRA presents a cevicheria with a large selection of tempting treats as well as contemporary cuisine with Peruvian inspirations: tiraditos, causas, delicious skewers, mouthwatering salads, empanadas, the famous Peruvian Shrimp Soup, Lomo Saltado, Scallops Quiniotto, Beef Tenderloin Tacu Tacu and for dessert: Churros with warm chocolate soup, Yoghurt Panna Cotta, Passionfruit Parfait. Tasting plates of Ceviche and Causa are also on the menu as is Leches de Tigre - Ceviche juices served with Gray Goose Vodka.

Two bar areas meet any occasion - Gaby's new Martinis - Lemon Grass, Apple and Cinnamon and Healthy Cocktails (minus the guilt factor!) Forbidden, Slim Green and Kiwi Sakerinha. New beers - Estrella (Inedit and DAMM), Bombardier, Acme and Pure Blonde. Stella on tap. And a great New World and Classic wine selection with parings, as well as Wine Tasting Plates will change each week - a great way to sample the best on the market.

Music to Match the Menu now at TERRA

The very latest in dining experiences - live DJs to match the menu. Friday and Saturday nights sees popular DJs Bite Sized Buddha, Suiki, Florian and Beijing's best, spin music to match the menu before picking up the atmosphere for Hora Noir and into the evening. They also add to TERRA'S Saturday and Sunday Brunch.

City Weekend Review

On Course

Second Bite Review, October, 2011

When Terra opened last year, expectations were high. How could they not be, given that the restaurant is owned by Gaby Alves, the same woman who brought us SALT and introduced Brazilian cheesebreads to the city? But a sudden turnover of chefs in the restaurant’s early days kept Terra from reaching full potential. Now, with Peruvian chef Paulo de Souza in the kitchen, the restaurant’s delivering on its promise.

The fall menu showcases South American fare and seafood, offering rich, autumnal flavors without being heavy or bland. A Malbec beef reduction and stir-fried peppers give the seared scallop causa (¥68) a slight smoky flavor, and the potato base lends a comfort-food texture, but the high quality scallops keep things light. We adored the hot prawn ceviche (¥78), made with an al dente slice of pumpkin and shrimp that are small but bursting with flavor, complemented by fava beans, asparagus and arugula. Pumpkin dishes are typical for fall, but this one is surprisingly spicy and refreshing, thanks to a delicious citrus chili sauce. For mains, seafood enthusiasts won’t want to miss the catch of the day (available on the ¥178-198 set dinner menus). It’s a mountain of fish, mussels, and clams atop a tomato base with gnocchi-sized pieces of potato. The fish on the day we went was some of the best cod we’ve ever had—flavorful, tender and flakey, its saltiness offset perfectly by the tomato.

Terra’s churros have always been excellent, but the suspiro de Lima (¥48) is another good dessert option. Suspiro is the Peruvian word for “meringue,” and the sweet is a martini glass filled with tart lemon custard, with crumbly pastry at the bottom and a tasty cinnamon skin on top.
