    City Weekend Says

Located in the basement of the Raffles City Mall, this cafeteria-style restaurant serves decent Malaysian food. The nasi lemak comes with a fishcake, half a boiled egg, fried peanuts and sardines and vegetable curry.

I really enjoyed my lunch today at Satay Temptation. The caveat is that I don't know anything about Malaysian food, but I know I liked what I ate. The basement of the Raffles City Mall is home to a dozen small stands, from Taiwanese to Dim Sum, but the hidden gem is Satay Temptation. By virtue of the pictures on the small menu, I settled on the Nasi Lemak with the pork roll option. After waiting about 10-15 minutes a plate of fragrant coconut rice with sides arrived. Sliced lukewarm fishcake, a spiced pork roll (think sausage without the casing), half a boiled egg, fried peanuts and sardines, and veggie curry on cucumber slices were served on the side with a small plastic cup of hot/sweet dipping sauce. The spiced pork was quite good and very flavorful, while the curry (which was slightly oily) was a nice saucy addition to the mix. About five bites into it, I figured out that the curry, pork and egg go best when mixed with the rice and topped with the spicy sauce. By doing that, I might have committed 9 degrees of malay culinary sin, but it was tasty. The fried sardines were nice and crispy and salty--thank god I only got a couple on my plate. Overall, I'll be returning...probably for the same thing.

If cafeteria style dining isn't ur thing, check out Bellagio, Hanashan, a Cantonese joint and a new Thai place on the 5th floor of the mall.
