The Middle Eastern and Moroccan food at this restaurant hidden away in the Prosper Center's food court is much milder than at other restaurants in the city. While the food on the whole doesn't really stand out, the Casablaca royal couscous is quite nice, especially the excellent merguez lamb sausage. Don't miss the Grace Vineyard wines--surprisingly good.
Mild Mid-Eastern
This Prosper Center restaurant has recently added a large collection of Moroccan and Middle Eastern dishes to the menu and transformed from an Italian restaurant into Casablanca. While there are some decent items, the food on the whole doesn’t particularly stand out.
Swiss chef Marco has decades of international experience, including a stint in Jordan. The Middle Eastern dishes here are much milder than at other restaurants around town. The baba ganoush (¥48) has a very subtle smoky flavor, much different from the strong garlic and eggplant blast at Alameen. The organic falafel (¥48) is also the mildest we’ve tried in Beijing, thankfully enhanced with a tangy yogurt sauce. The best appetizer we tried was the tomato bruschetta (¥48), a nice blend of fresh tomatoes and olive oil.
The Moroccan food is passable, but lamb tagine with dried prunes and raisins (¥148) isn’t up to the standards of El Wajh or Argana. The Casablanca royal couscous (¥168) was our favorite, as the fine couscous is perfectly cooked and the spicy merguez lamb sausage is excellent—we just wish there had been more of it.
The Middle Eastern desserts aren’t terribly authentic. The baklava (¥48) is ground nut filling wrapped up in a filo pouch. It’s creative, but lacks the crispy pastry layers that make baklava so tasty. The basboussa (¥48) is basically sweet couscous. While the kitchen claims that the right ingredients aren’t available here, that doesn’t explain why the basboussa at Za’atar is spot on.
Service is well meaning, but somewhat absent minded. The restaurant does get credit for stocking a Grace Vineyard Chardonnay (¥35/180), a shockingly good Chinese wine at a great price.
