Hidden Hutong Treasure
Located inside an inconspicuous hutong, this hidden restaurant is perfect for dining outdoors in the summer. With a charming courtyard, a delightful upstairs patio and small dining rooms that frame the outdoor seating areas, the space exudes a warm, earthy feel. The younger sister to its Shunyi counterpart, Palette Vino offers a bargain of a set menu (¥98 for three courses, ¥118 with dessert) along with an extensive selection of wines (¥35-45/glass). We had a mediocre salt and pepper calamari, followed by dill marinated salmon, which melted in our mouths as we savored its buttery goodness. Our ricotta ravioli tasted uncannily like pumpkin pie. The main courses were the meal’s highlights. The red snapper fillet was exceptionally tender and tasty and the grilled lamb chops were smoky and juicy. We didn’t take to the chestnut-infused panna cotta, which turned out to be a peculiar fusion of flavors.
