Mediterraneo, an old Beijing favorite, has been reincarnated in this swank venue, featuring creme-colored stucco walls, burnt-amber accents and large candelabras. The restaurant houses an impressive collections of fine wines, perfect for sampling together with the delicious tapas and desserts, like the must-try chocolate lava cake.

My only visit to Med was, to say the least, a big disappointment. On the morning of the 14th of August, 2007 we called Med for a reservation for 8:15 that evening. When our group arrived at just after 8 pm there were a number of staff members at the front door (elevator) and we told them we had a booking for 8:15 pm. We were told that they were having a special event tonight and that the restaurant was closed to the public and they could not seat our group. We reiterated we had a reservation and asked why they hadn't, at least, called us back with the mobile phone number we had left in the morning. As a long time expat in Beijing and a frequent patron of the former Sanlitun Mediterraneo I couldn't believe that this "Med" could be under the same management, as is inferred in their promotional materials. Anyhow the girl told us to come back tomorrow. There will not be many tomorrows for a business which treats its customers with such disregard. If this is the kind of loyalty they show their customers, what loyalty can they expect in return.

Can't speak for their service on the night of special events, but had an absolutely terrific meal here last week. They've revamped the menu, and the food was, in both taste and presentation, uniformly terrific. The atmosphere was really pleasant, friendly but not overly boisterous. Only caveat is the place's price, but, at least according to my experience there, you're getting your money's worth.

Wasn't all that impressed with the food... The plate itself was hot but the food was not. Taste-wise was just acceptable. If they cannot handle a party of 8 serving food of decent temperature at the same time, they may as well turn Med into a Jap restaurant serving cold sashimi? Service was a-l-r-i-g-h-t, though they'd actually put out their own reasoning as excuse instead of accommodating with the guest's needs. A little slow for a not-so-busy night.

Oh dear, agreeing with the above poster, when our food arrived (after an hour of waiting I might add) it too was cold. The polenta and Risotto had actually formed a crust like it had just been sitting there forever. Also if we order one bottle of white wine and one bottle of red, isn't it just common sense to ask which guests would like which one as opposed to just pouring everyone a tiny glass of white...??? This place gets one star - and that is for the knife, fork and spoon. For god sake sort it out!

I always come to this restaurant with my girlfriend when I free. We really relax to enjoy the music from the lounge. The location is very good and convenient, the waitress always friendly ask me the feedback of the foods and service. However some times the food comes little bit slowly (quality is perfect), but the service people will fix it in time. After they renew the menu, the both dishes and service are becomes better than better. Does anybody know the Med under the Block 8.

I can not see where all the, not so good reviews are coming from here. I used to be a professional chef back in the day, so I see my judgment as fairly good on this matter. Recently I have been a frequent guest at block8's MED. Last time was just a couple of days ago, at Valantine's day to be precise. I was there with my fiancé and they served a fantastic 6 course set menu for two including a glass of Moët for the price of, if I am not misstaken 470 RMB. That is what I consider a steal! Anyways, if the price was good, the impression of the menu was even better. We started with fried halloumi on top of fresh beans with a taste of lemon and mint, excellent with the freshly baked bread and red pesto. Secondly was my personal favourite, perfectly seared scallops with just the right glassiness served with green pea puré and a heavy truffle foam. Just thinking about it makes me long for my next visit. Third course, asparagus and crab soup did not really come up to the same sky-high level as the courses before but was still amazing. After the soup we were served a nicely soured orange gratiné topped with just the perfect amount of calvados. Exactly what we needed to freshen up just in time for the main course. I had choosen the baby lobster and my fiancé went for the sirloin steak. Both of them were perfectly cooked and had the characteristic taste from coalgrill. Last but not least we had the chocolate fondant, they call it lava cake or something. Melting hot chocolate under a thin crust of cake served with fresh strawberries. Well thats a way to end a meal. So to sum up, food was excellent, staff was around when needed but not in your face as in other semi classy places, the selection of wines and temperature when it was served was perfect. With the prices in mind, I mean you really get your money's worth. I can not give MED less then a five!

Forgot to put the stars up...

Wine cellar is extensive, and the selection of food & wine is impressive. They are great at matching wines to compliment the dishes on their menu.

I've been here over 20 times, and this is still one of my favorite all-round places for delicious food and good drinks. The ambiance/environment is excellent, they have a great wine cellar, and wifi connection ;)

2nd try of Med was a big boost to the confidence. Service is as always, attentive. Italian cold cut was fantastic (I'd actually suggest a bigger portion of Parma ham w/ melon compared to other kinds of ham, I wanted more melon but on the whole it's yum) Very good wine selection to match with the food. For the lava cake, and as a chocolate lover I'd definitely suggest you try and SHARE it. It's wise to share some flowin' lovin' after all the fulfillin' food.

The new menu is superb and any wrinkles that existed before have pretty much been completely ironed out. The asparagus soup was amazing, the Australian cut tenderloin was cooked to perfection and the lava cake for dessert was off the hook. I would comment on the seafood skewer, BUT MY GIRLFRIEND ATE IT ALL! From that fact, I extrapolate that it was pretty awesome.

Went there for the first time this week end and i was not disappointed ! The service was perfect, the menu is well done and the wine list is extensive. Food was great, Antipasti felt authentic, meat was cooked as ordered. Warm atmosphere and Wifi... Definitely a great spot !

I ordered the beef with asparagus for only 128 kuai. The meat was so tender, it practically melted in my mouth!! Attentive staff, great service, great fare for the quality of food. My favorite restaurant in Beijing!

I was really worried this place would be rubbish from all the reviews. Short story is the food is VERY good and the staff are prob some of the best in Beijing. The have obviously sorted out the staffing issues from the older reviews.
All the food was very tasty. My husband even had pudding which is unheard of. It's not cheap but the quality of the raw ingredients is obviously very high.
Def worth a trip for first timers. We will return.

Wow, cool down. Trendy yes, but food does not exceed the ordinary ... while the prices do. In my opinion, there are much better and more authentic med-eateries in town. Concerning service: it's one of the places, where the Chinese staff is so international, that they refuse to speak Chinese even to Chinese. Ok, but not at all a must. I expected more.

First of all, in the interest of full disclosure, I should say that I was the lucky winner of a dinner for 2 thru City Weekend and Block 8.
I happened to go there rather early and on a Thursday night, and the service was quite good. Friendly staff, solid English. Very discrete and understanding when we asked if we could take the bottle of Voss with us. Not sure what it would be like on a busy night.
While I'm sure the entrees are fantastic, we decided to go with trying a selection of different tapas.
My recommendations (apologize for not remembering the names, but the menu has great translations): 1. Can't remember the name of the dish, but it was something with cheese, pears, figs and olive oil. Delicious! 2. There was a duck and lobster dish in a lobster bisque. I never had lobster bisque before then. I am a believer in lobster bisque now. Especially with the golden nuggets of potatoes. Actually, I feel like that would be a fantastic tapas by itself. 3. If you have to choose between the Vegetarian tapas plate vs. the non-Vegetarian, I highly recommend going with the Vegetarian. There is a scene in Ratatouille where Remy, the main character, savors different foodstuffs to create new and exciting flavors in his mouth. This is like that. 4. The Lava chocolate cake for dessert. First of all, it will make room for itself. Second, you won't have to worry about the ice cream melting before you are done.
The ambiance is fantastic. The one detail that I couldn't get over was the wooden floors. It had the quality of being old and storied - as if many feet had walked over it. The view of Chaoyang going south is quite incredible (on days when the visibility extends past your nose).
All in all, a great experience RMB for RMB (see above).

I have to say, Med has come a long way. The last time I ate there was about 2-3 months ago. Wasn't satisfied at all. I made a trip back there last night thinking the food would be mediocre. I was shocked! It was those one of those eye popping moment where I was like "where did this come from????!!!!!" The food was excellent. It was well executed, paring was on the dot, and most importantly made me feel comfortable. It's when you go to you favorite cozy restaurant down the street to have a simple good meal. I recommend this to everyone!

forgot to add zee starz~!

The highly-anticipated reincarnation of the old Sanlitun favorite is immediately inviting, with its great view, crème-colored stucco walls, burnt red accents and massive candelabras. The curved, floor to ceiling glass wine case is stunning, and overall it seemed as though Med had successfully made the transition from cozy restaurant to fabulous venue.
But surprisingly, the mezze temptation (¥85 for two) had little to say for itself, and only the Pinot Grigio (¥310 per bottle) and the spread that came with our bread could break the awkward silence. The tiger prawns (¥150) were delicious, but the black cod filet (¥120) was a bit oily and the roasted feta (¥36) a tad dry. Ultimately, it was only the panna cotta with preserved orange (¥45) and the chocolate soup with basil shortbread (¥58) which could compete with the new setting and the impressive wine list.
