This sprawling Shunyi restaurant offers a fusion of Mediterranean flavors and a beautiful second-story terrace. The menu can be a little hit-or-miss, but the dishes that are done well are generously portioned and highly satisfying. Try the very large Greek salad, topped with excellent imported feta, or the cheesy French onion soup.
Mediterranean Oasis
Set in a quiet corner of Houshayu, next to Gahood Villa, this sprawling new restaurant offers a fusion of Mediterranean flavors and a beautiful second-story terrace. The food is straightforward and generously portioned, but the quality of ingredients is inconsistent. For instance, the imported feta on the huge Greek salad (¥58) was some of the best we’ve had in China, but the lamb chops (¥188) were terribly fatty. Our favorite dish was the insanely cheesy French onion soup (¥68). Our spoons dripped with emmenthal with each bite, and the bowl is large enough to be a meal in itself for smaller appetites. The “pasta Napolitana” is a little pricey at ¥138, but the homestyle Mediterranean taste of stewed onion, tomato and pepper, sprinkled with an impressive portion of parmesan served on the side, is ultimate comfort food. As the chef is Greek, we were disappointed to not find any typically Greek desserts—like baklava—on the menu. The tiramisu (¥48) is standard, but the cheesecake (¥48) misses the mark. The building and décor are quite nice, though they sometimes cross over into shanzhai Versailles territory, but the atmosphere would be much improved with a change of soundtrack and the removal of the large TV screen.
