This Sichuanese restaurant's been around since the late 1940s and remains extremely popular with locals. The gongbao jiding is famous for being some of the city's best, but don't expect anything too spicy here, as tastes have been modified to suit Beijingren. Service is surprisingly good, and portions are huge for the price you pay.
Choice Chinese Review
Sichuan Classic
This Sichuan restaurant has been incredibly popular with Beijingren since it opened in the late 1940s. The flavors are adjusted for local palates, so don’t expect anything too fiery, but the food is excellent. Emei Jiujia is famous for serving Beijing’s best gongbao jiding. Get the deluxe version (精品宫保鸡丁, ¥48), a huge serving made with cashews and almonds. The meat is tender, and the sauce is sweet and savory, with a slight tickle of numbing spice. The Emei tofu (峨嵋豆腐, ¥18) is another house specialty, with a subtly sour, chili-based sauce. We also recommend the sesame pancakes (芝麻酱糖饼, ¥15), but the popular cold noodles with chicken (鸡丝凉面, ¥15) are just average. Service is extremely competent, and you even get free ice cream for dessert.
