City Weekend Says

This three-story Spanish establishment features a bar on the first floor, a tapas joint on the second and a fine-dining restaurant on the third. The different-floor, different-menu concept is awkward, but there are some decent dishes and very reasonably priced Spanish wines on offer. Try the "blind man's paella," made with pre-shelled shrimp, and don't miss the torrijas for dessert.

Spanish Selection

Spanish food has taken Sanlitun by storm over the past couple years, and Olé is the latest addition. The three-story establishment offers drinks, casual tapas and fine dining. While the different-floor, different-menu concept is awkward, there are some decent dishes and very reasonably priced Spanish wines on offer.

Olé’s not the first restaurant in town that only allows you to order certain dishes on certain floors—Invito does it, too—but it requires being very familiar with both menus before you know where you want to sit. For example, paella is available on both floors, but gazpacho is only on the second floor, and while there are salads on both menus, they are different salads. Service is another drawback. Olé has a lot of work to do in this area, although management is aware of the problem and taking steps to solve it.

On the third floor menu, the avocado salad with red tuna ceviche (¥65) is similar in price and quality to the tuna ceviche at TERRA, made with perfectly ripe avocado, cherry tomatoes and red onion. Also only on the third floor, the beef sirloin steak (¥150) is tender and served with a nice Roquefort sauce. Paella comes in only one size on the second floor, but a number of sizes on the third. We recommend the “blind man’s paella” (¥110/person, minimum two people), which comes with pre-shelled shrimp, along with a selection of seafood and chicken. From the second floor tapas menu, the gazpacho (¥25) is better in taste and value than the one at Niajo, but falls short of the stunning soup at Carmen. The toast menu is not as extensive as Carmen’s, and the tomato bread with Guijuelo ham (¥45) is nothing to write home about. The highlight of our meal, available downstairs, is the rich, cinnamon-laded torrijas (¥25) for dessert.
