This lively spot brings the atmosphere of a Spanish auberge to the heart of Sanlitun. The great location and live flamenco guitar draws in the crowds, and tasty sangria and the excellent and generously portioned tapas, salads and paella keeps customers coming back.
Nestled between Nali and 3.3, the new incarnation of this well-known Spanish restaurant is well-suited for both romantic dates and big parties. Simply decorated, the restaurant features long green benches, photos of Spanish horses on the walls and shuttered windows overlooking a small cozy patio. Welcoming live music complements the jubilant atmosphere.
We were delighted by a huge selection of cold and hot tapas, toast canapés, salads, soups and mains. For starters, we tried an enjoyable set of canapés: crispy bread topped with crab, surimi and mayo (¥18) and beef with blue cheese (¥16). Gazpacho (¥38), served with a side of tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and croutons, was a highlight of the evening. This summer soup is made in a special blender for a uniquely smooth texture and has a healthy and very fresh taste. We also recommend the delicious—and huge—mesclun salad with marinated beef and goat cheese (¥65). For those who come on a date, paella for two (¥199) is a must. Served on a skillet with squid, cuttlefish, shrimp, scallops and clams topping a cushion of rice, chicken, tomatoes, peas, beans and a touch of saffron, this traditional dish made the evening unforgettable. Among a large selection of wines, juices and cocktails, we chose the very refreshing red and white sangria (¥38/glass).
Whether you’re already a fan of Spanish cuisine or just getting ready for your first bite of paella, Carmen is the perfect place to satisfy your appetite.
