Fresh Start
Grange Grill is known for big things: a tomahawk steak big enough for an entire family, and the “chop shop” platter that’s basically a whole farmyard full of meat. But with its new appetizer menu, the restaurant is taking things in a more sophisticated, fine dining direction, with smaller portions, elegant presentation and gourmet flavors.
The new Grange Cobb salad (¥105) is nicely presented on a large piece of slate, with a little row of hard-boiled quail eggs along the side, sitting atop a tasty avocado sauce. The salad is large and fresh, made with lettuce, crispy bacon, tender chicken, sundried tomato and blue cheese dressing. We were even more impressed with the foie gras and duck (¥165). The confit duck is rich, but not gamey, and the superb flavors will impress even those who normally avoid duck. The foie gras is quite sweet and combines with the orange marmalade to taste of Christmas. Eat it all spread on the large, fluffy block of toasted bread and with the various other fruit sauces on the side.
Despite the upscale new appetizers, Grange still excels in massive mains. The new surf and turf platter (¥495) is perfect for a food-loving couple. You get two small pieces of steak, two huge, juicy tiger prawns, half a lobster, a large slab of buttery cod and two whole chicken legs—which were actually our favorite part of the plate.
Desserts are also best shared. We tried the chocolate trio (¥95), which isn’t even the biggest dessert on the menu, but comes with chocolate cake, delicious chocolate mousse inside a chocolate ice cream cone, rich chocolate ice cream, a chocolate tart topped with curls of white chocolate and candied kumquats. All prices subject to surcharge.
