This stylish restaurant's like a high-maintenance lover—light on the heart, heavy on the pocketbook. The cocktails alone are worth a visit, and there's an extensive and well executed vegetarian menu.
Thai Roller
Smooth, stylish and delicious, Patara’s like a high-maintenance lover—light on the heart, heavy on the pocketbook.
The interior is plush, with starched white tablecloths, dark wood finishings, and gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows. The friendly staff quietly swish by in traditional Thai silk garb, though sometimes they swish away a bit too quickly, like when we had to call the waiter, who had just delivered a dish, back over to remind him that we had ordered rice to go with it.
The innovative drink menu alone is worth returning for. We tried the green mango margarita (¥58) and the Bangkok martini (¥58), a very generous pouring of quality booze that came with a full stick of lemongrass peeping out the top.
The food was expertly prepared, with nice touches, such as a bowl of rice (¥16) that was half sweet Thai rice and half wild brown rice. An extensive vegetarian menu was also a pleasant surprise, and we tucked into confusingly-named vegetarian spring rolls (¥68), fried sticks of tofu smothered in a sweet and sour sauce topped with chunks of pineapple and cherry tomatoes, a green vegetable curry with healthy dollops of coconut cream swirled throughout (¥68) and fried string green beans (¥68) that had just the right amount of chopped garlic and spice. Though tasty, the servings were small for the price, compared with other quality Thai joints in town. Considering that we have to settle up debts prior to chunjie, Patara is one place we’ll just have to love and leave—at least until flusher times.
