    City Weekend Says

The first vegan restaurant in town to embrace a globally influenced menu, this relaxing, comfortable spot has a lot to offer. The hummus is the city's best, and other dishes, from sandwiches and burgers to healthy entrees and desserts, are also very successful. Perfect karma-boosting fare, for vegans and omnivores alike.

    City Weekend Review

    Vegan Victory

Last month, we started hearing rumors about the hummus at a new vegan restaurant. Several people claimed that it was the best in the city. It turns out they were absolutely right. The hummus (¥25) at this relaxing, comfortable hutong restaurant is hands-down phenomenal, a rush of garlic and tahini that is perfectly textured and beautifully presented. And the hummus isn’t the only thing that the restaurant’s doing right. Our mouths water as we recall the open-faced “vegan stink out” sandwich (¥58). Slices of delicious multigrain bread are slathered in homemade, egg-free mayonnaise and piled high with organic sauerkraut. The dal bhat (¥65), served with rice and chutney, is better than versions we’ve had in the city’s best Indian restaurants. While we were skeptical of vegan desserts, the chocolate cake (¥25) proves that you can have a rich, delicious sweet without eggs or dairy. Portions are big, and omnivores shouldn’t worry about not leaving full. As the first vegan restaurant in town to offer a global selection of food, The Veggie Table is a much-needed addition to the city’s dining scene. We hope the healthy, animal- and earth-friendly menu continues to develop and that this is part of a larger trend in Beijing dining.
