Situated at a Chongwen address that mystifies all but the handiest of taxi drivers, this restaurant is a gem worth scouting out. Down to earth with great service, Yunteng Binguan’s strength lies in the excellent execution of simple, home-style Yunnan dishes. Don't miss the homemade cheese or mint salad.
Obscure Excellence
Choice Chinese review
Situated at a Chongwen address that mystifies all but the handiest of taxi drivers, Yunteng Binguan is a gem worth scouting out. We were absolutely taken with their sautéed milk curd (煎乳饼, ¥24), tender yet toothsome squares with a flavor akin to haloumi cheese. Served with a bright salt-and-pepper dip, it’s a punchy plateful. Try a mint salad—we recommend the wonderfully silky tofu-skin variation (薄荷拌豆腐皮, ¥12) that finishes fragrant on the tongue. Equally well balanced are the spicy fava beans (特色醇香云豆, ¥16), but we were disappointed with the cross-the-bridge noodles (¥20). Admittedly, it’s hard to beat Yun Hai Yao’s version. Down to earth (if you skip the ¥200+ mushroom dishes) with great service, Yunteng Binguan’s strength lies in their excellent execution of simple, home-style Yunnan dishes.
