The experience of dining here is as memorable as the food. Tucked away down a hutong, and set in a beautiful courtyard, the prospective diner here has but to let the wait staff know what they can't eat, and sit back as the kitchen whips up a delicious set menu tailored specifically to their tastes. The standard set menu is RMB100, but RMB200 and RMB300 options are available.

Awww really great place, so romantic!! The food is good and fresh, and the courtyard is perfect for a pleasant hot BJ night, all lit up with candles! Prices are not on the low side, but I think it's definitely worth it. Would go back without a doubt!

Dali is a great place - After living in Yunnan for a year, I think the food here is much better than in "real" Yunnan.
Regarding a post above that claims the restaurant is best for groups of 6 or more... I have something to add here. While any restaurant experience is fun with more people, I think you're put at a serious disadvantage if you are between 4-7 people at Dali. They bring the same amount of food for a table of 4 as a table of 7. The next "break" is for 8 people, at which point they bring two of every dish (and you certainly have the choice for paying for an extra person or two if you are 6-7). With 7 people it's almost ridiculous when you see the tiny plate of cha shu gu mushrooms meant to feed all seven of you! -- and then you see a table of 3 that has gotten the same sized portion for less than half the price!

Perfect courtyard restaurant. Thoughtful yet unpretentious decor and service create a lovely atmosphere, especially in the summer. Same goes for the food which is always delicious. Wonderful that you don't have to order. Fantastic place for a date or civilized group. Current favourite restaurant in Beijing

dali is the type of restaurant that epitomizes an idea restaurant experience in beijing. it's old coutyard flair + cozy twinkle lights + great wine is condusive for a perfect summer or winter evening chatting and eating great food with friends.
the restaurant is ideal for groups of six or more, the more the merrier here. the dishes here are unique and absolutely mouthwatering & the service is also outstanding. be sure to ask for "less oil" when they ask you if you have any special requirements for dishes. time after time, dali remains one of my favorite restaurants in beijing. i couldn't say enough great things about this place!

The interesting part of Dali Courtyard is you don't have to make the order, just sit back and wait for the dishes to come. Some of them are quite nice, e.g. the mushroom wrapped in lotus leave and the interesting fried dessert. Others are okay, most of them are mildly spicy. It'd be great if they change all the bitten dishes to new ones. Pretty difficult to find, hidden in a really dark hutong. Btw, it's now RMB120/pax!

Hey Dude: This is great food, but overpriced for what you get. I went with friends, ordered the RMB138 set, and we left starving. The service also stunk for this price range. I read the first two volumes of Dream of Red Mansions while we waited for our food and the third, fourth and fifth while we waited for our bill. Also: BE SURE TO RESERVE A TABLE OUTSIDE. The outside is beautiful, but the inside is a grungy, halogen-lit horror show. On the other hand, if you like paint chips in your wine glass, inside is the place to be.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G Yunnan food The ambience and service were excellent. Not fancy, but comfy, rustic, and simple. Three adjectives seldom used in China. They speak english too. It is a set menu at 100rmb a person. You just tell them what you cannot eat like; no meat, no pork, non-spicey, etc. and they customize the courses to your liking. Go with a group, as the set includes about 10 or 12 courses.

Dali is a great place to bring visitors. The courtyard in summertime is one of the nicest places for dinner in Beijing. I have been there several times since last year and I would love to try some other dishes. It is almost all the same for one year now! As it is very easy to prepare only one set menu for the always packed restaurant I would highly recommend to implement a NEW set menu. Than, I will definetely bring more people, who will - guaranteed! - love the ambiance. 5 star for the ambiance 3 star for the repeating and a little too greasy food
