The menu at this new branch of the popular Yunnan restaurant is slightly different from that at the Sanlitun location. We recommend the smoked bean curd in spicy sauce and the misnamed "broiled river eel," which is actually a tender and delicately spiced fish. The cross the bridge rice noodles are also a very healthy dish that's perfect for chilly weather.
With a Sanlitun location that always seems to have a line out the door, it was about time Middle 8th opened a new branch. The new location is decorated white and, like its predecessor, has ample and comfortable seating. We loved the smoked bean curd in spicy sauce (¥18), coiled strips of tofu topped with greens and a delicious sauce. But our favorite dish was the “broiled river eel” (蕉叶烤鱼, ¥49), which, despite the name, is actually a tender and delicately spiced fish. The fragrant bushes grilled lamb chop (¥78) was nicely cooked, but the cumin-heavy seasoning could have used an extra kick of spice or salt. For an extremely healthy dish that’s perfect for colder weather, order the Yunnan cross the bridge rice noodles (过桥米线, ¥22). Served in a nourishing soup with mushrooms, tomato, finely sliced morsels of pork and even some pineapple, the portion is large enough for two to share. This favorite spot for Yunnan food is already filling up with local diners, so get in quick before the crowds start lining up.
