    City Weekend Says

It may be yet another Yunnanese place overstuffed with ethnic tchotchkes, but Gulou restaurant still knocks out delicious renditions of minority classics. The fried pork with glutinous rice cake is a crowd-pleaser, and the pan-fried dried beef is flavorful, chewy and crispy. But the real star is the fried goat cheese. The service is a little too relaxed, but nothing that can’t be remedied with patience and a Dali beer.

This new Yunnan restaurant on Beiluoguxiang, right at the intersection of Gulou Dong Dajie, has decent service and some very good dishes. The menu is only in Chinese. I really liked the crispy, spicy beef and the milder chicken with flowers. A fish/papaya soup was okay, but this mashed potato dish tasted fermented and weird, and my Yunnanese friend wouldn't touch it. We over-ordered, and the bill for three people was RMB150. Hoping to go back and get the Chinese names of the dishes and write a more helpful review with this information.

    Tasty Town

It may be yet another Yunnanese place overstuffed with ethnic tchotchkes, but Yun’er knocks out delicious renditions of minority classics. The fried pork with glutinous rice cake (¥28) is a crowd-pleaser, pork stir-fried in a savory black-bean sauce balanced by gooey rice cakes. The pan-fried dried beef (¥58) ranges from chewy to crispy, with crackling ma and cutting la flavors. Refresh the palate by diving into the mint salad with the tofu-esque yunpi (¥16). But the real star is the fried goat cheese (¥28) that’s lightly toasted and wonderfully garlicky, with a warm, soft interior. The service is a little too relaxed, but nothing that can’t be remedied with patience and a Dali beer.
