Formerly housed in the Confucius Temple, the museum moved to Fuxingmen to for more space. Documenting life in Old Beijing through more than 200,000 relics and archival pictures, the museum has explanations in English as well as an area for cultural activities such as ink-rubbing or Peking opera face-painting.

Description -
The museum now has free entry. You'll have to call 3-4 days ahead to reserve both your tickets and your entry time, but the summary of Beijing's history is worth it. There are antiquities and art like any other museum, but the real bonus is on the top floor. It's dedicated to life in Old Beijing, complete with relics, photographs, and bronze statues of the denizens thereof: toymakers, barbers, rickshaws. The section on Peking Opera isn't bad either, but many of the relics are mere reproductions of those from the Mei Lanfang museum.
The special exhibit costs about 20 rmb, but no need for advance reservations.
