With two wraparound balconies and a rooftop beer garden, this mammoth microbrewery pours luscious in-house brews, the likes of which could only come from a 700-year-old Bavarian brand. The mouthwatering (and wallet-lightening) German fare, from brats to schnitzels, is delectable as well.

1308 Beers on the Wall

Beer and space are the highlights of the new Drei Kronen 1308 Bar and Restaurant. Located just across from Worker’s Stadium, 1308 has three floors of seating, two of which are wraparound balconies that encircle ground-level beer vats, a rooftop beer garden and a walkway to the Stadium sports bar next door. 1308’s in-house microbrews—Helles Lager Beer, Schwarze Krone Dark Style Beer and Felsen Weisse Traditional Wheat Beer—are all solid selections, and they come in three sizes: 0.3 Liters for YY48, 0.5L for YY58 and 1.0L for YY108. Entrees can get a little pricier with steaks upwards of YY200, but the schnitzel (YY105) is a German tradition that is worth indulging. The best bang for your kuai is the “Best of the Brewery” combo (YY140), which features a smattering of meat loaf, bratwurst, sausage and a side of mashed potatoes. Whether one arrives with an empty or full stomach, however, 1308’s beer impresses most. Holding a one liter stein of golden wheat microbrew to one’s lips is as satisfying an experience as one can have on the Beijing bar scene.

agree about the various guys who seem to be decoration (??) but the waitresses are nice and the beer (now 241 all the time) makes it worthwhile - why pay 25 at the Den for TsingTao (outside happy hour) when you pay 58 (241)? not even worth discussing but then again I am not sure how it survives! Haven't really tried the food (not really for vegetarians, is it?)

sweetie

Whichever Beer you order is always has always been nice. Its a good change from the bussy bars especially if you need not a noisy place. Good ambience too.

abertausende

Drei kronen is the "Disneyland" version of a German restaurant - and original since 2008 rather than 1308. That said, the atmosphere inside is quite nice. The staff (all Chinese) wear Bavarian style costumes - dresses for the waitresses and "lederhosen" for the guys. I'm not sure what the role of the lederhosen guys is - there are plenty of them, but they are not serving and I have only seen them mucking about with the sound system etc. The waitresses look very nice, and are attentive without being in your face all the time - which can otherwise be a problem in Beijing.

Drei kronen is a micro brewerry: they brew three kinds of beer on site: pilsner, wheat, and dark beer. The wheat beer is very similar in style to Paulaner - or for that matter Erdinger, Franziskaner and other wheat beers that are available bottled in Beijing. The price is 58 RMB for half a liter - expensive, although given that it is draft and brewed on site it might not be unreasonable. At lunch time they also have a "buy two get one free" offer if you really can drink 1.5 liters at that time of day.

I have been to Drei kronen twice - last time I had Sweinehaxe (148 RMB). Sweinehaxe normally takes a long time to prepare: half an hour is not unreasonable. At Drei kronen, however, it took only 3 minutes! Very impressive, except of course that it had been cooked long time in advance and only heated in the microwave. This is not delicious and for 148RMB I expect better - Schindler's and Der Landgraf - both of which I recommend - have the real thing (cheaper).

Another annoyance I want to mention is that both times I have been to Drei Kronen (weekend lunch time) they have had some very loud chinese event on the 3rd floor: some nongmin screeming "lucky draw" prizes into a microphone (that's what I think it was). This was unrelated to the restaurant/bar business they have downstairs, and is probably something they have had to put on to make ends meet.

very nice place - but they definitely need to lower the prices otherwise this huge place will never be filled. I was there only once cuz I cant afford prices which are higher than the beer price on the bavarian beer festival!!!

Great beer but a little pricey.

The place is enormous and very pleasant but I can't see how it can ever get filled.
