This Shuangjing hideaway has a nice space, with tall ceilings and plush and intimate seating, but their cocktails need work. Stick to beer, and make sure your tolerance for talkative expats is high.

Cave Dwelling
The basement space at this Shuangjing bar is lovely: plush sofas and chairs, tall ceilings, a mosaic-tiled bar, intimate lighting and a pleasant light jazz soundtrack. However, their drinks need a lot of work. A whiskey sour (¥55) tasted like lemon juice and a dash of whiskey and lacked the definitive egg whites. They’re in soft opening until mid-March, but they have plenty of events offering free “Hidden Cocktails” to women. It’s a nice space to chill, but bring your guy friends. ■ Alex Searson
