This tiny cocktail courtyard bar might not hold many people, but their house infusions and large collection of whiskeys makes for a nice place to get cozy with a few friends. It's hard to find, but worth it when you get there.
Mai Bar bar have really good cocktail. The bartender has previously worked in Aphothcary and Glen in Beijing. Mai Bar makes all of their cocktails with in-house ingredients using special recipes.
This Is Mai Bar
This hutong gem was scarcely even in soft opening territory on our first visit, but will launch by the time you read this. Spartan furnishings are compensated for by the siheyuan setting. The main room boasts a long, pale wood bar. Owner Jeff Ji apprenticed at Apothecary and Glen, so he knows how to mix a drink. He manages a balance between classy and affordable, though, with cocktails around ¥50 and imported beers starting at ¥30. Look for the door at the north-east corner of the intersection with Chenniandian Hutong, marked by two small red lanterns. ■ Paul Murphy
