Hidden Dreams is a comfortable, tango-themed brasserie, where patrons can gaze out large bay windows over a Qingdao, cocktails or an array of specialty coffees. They also have a small sandwich and pasta menu, not to mention wi-fi. Weekly tango matinees feature lessons and a traditional fiesta Argentina.

Tango for Two
Find a quiet, secluded area in this urban madness, toss in a couple Argentines, a Turkish tango dancer and a handful of bohemian Chinese, and the results will have a striking semblance to Hidden Dreams. Tucked into the Social Science Institute compound just east of Yugong Yishan, the bar is a dreamily comfortable setting for a tango-themed brasserie. Dozens of potted plants, from the exotic to the ordinary, compose the most alluring part of the café's otherwise classic decor. Patrons can gaze out the large bay windows over an espresso (YY15) or Qingdao (YY18). A wide array of specialty coffees (Irish Coffee is YY28), clichéd cocktails (Pink Lady is YY30) and imaginative infusions (Dark Plum and Tea Shake are YY25) could reel in almost any palate, as could the sandwich and pasta menu. Yet the ambience of the place seems to belong to those who have trekked the Andes. If not in attendance for the weekly milonga nights (Friday night tango matinees include lessons followed by a traditional fiesta Argentina), patrons need not lust far, for similar Southern American melodies are on the house at any other time. The owner says “romántico.” We say “romantic.”
