A cozy cafe-bar off Chaodao Hutong on Nanluoguxiang. With comfy couches and a wide selection of tea, coffee and wines, it's a nice place to spend an evening whiling away the hours with friends.
Secret Retreat
This hutong café-bar has the charm of a hidden vacation retreat, nestled serenely amid the residential homes off Chaodou Hutong. With comfortable couches, plush pillows and soft lighting, Offside encourages lounging. Cocktails and most teas and coffees are ¥28-¥38, but the real appeal is the decent wine list (¥300-¥2,800). In the evenings, the mostly-Chinese crowd plays cards and chats quietly. We recommend an early evening visit to score a comfy couch and avoid the smoke. ■ Lauren Johnson
