The Rickshaw Has Closed.
Sharing owners with Saddle Cantina, this 24-hour expat haven enlivens Sanlitun with a pool table, sports broadcast on large plasma screens and a menu of solid pub fare. Rickshaw cultivates a "guy's guy" kind of feeling, but with Wi-Fi, good cocktails, "energy salads" and one of the most pleasant balconies in Beijing, it brings in a diverse crowd.

Sharing owners with Cox, Rickshaw enlivens a long-languishing corner of Sanlitun. With a pool table and sports on the big screen TV, it cultivates a guy's guy kind of feeling. But with Wi Fi, good cocktails, "energy salads" and one of the most pleasant balconies in Beijing, it brings in a diverse, after-work crowd. Perfect for anytime anyone.

I like this place and go there every couple weeks or so. It is not fancy at all; it just is what it is and is good enough as a place to stop in after work for a good burger and a beer or two. I think the Cobb salad is really good too.

I had heard a lot of good things about this bar but our experience was not good.
The bar was not clean and it may be the cleaners did not show up that day.
The waiters were nice to us. The foreigners we tried to speak did not speak to us .It was not a good day.
We tried some snacks.Chicken wings and some burger .It was too much butter or cheese for me. Not so happy with the food.

I went to Rickshaw last night after a long absence (probably hadn't gone in a year). Perhaps not surprizingly, I recognized a few regulars who don't seem to have left the place in the past 12 months... I had the chicken wings, which were great, and so was the blue cheese dressing, which is served in portions large enough to go with around 10 wings or more. I also had the "bengal tiger" drink, which I don't remember from last year and really liked. Service was fine for a decently crowded Wednesday night. I do agree that the music can get obnoxious here, though. It was fine last night, but I remember weekends in the past where when we asked the DJ to turn down his ear-shatteringly loud, AWFUL music, he refused, so we left. And that was a year ago.

This place has been going downhill ever since Chad left. Sure, the burittos are huge, but still.... Made a mistake to order a long island iced tea... full of shitty booze. far from even having the rights to call itself a cocktail, yet alone a decent cocktail. Should have sticked with Stela and pool table.

Burgers were nice. The place needs to be kept clean.
On some occassions I found the waiters were sufficient enough to give good service. This time though they werent enough and couple of times had to get up and seek attention.
With so many new bars coming up now without any great decor, this place is going to loose its charm if the owners dont spruce up the place and do something new

Poor decor (inexistent, actually), poor food, horrible service. With the array of pubs and bars in Beijing I can't understand why people keep going back.

Hey Dude,
Here's an idea: Refer to the dish names on the menu by number like they do at other restaurants with non-English speaking waitstaff. That way, you won't get my order wrong three times in a row.
Here's another idea: Stop the "come back in two days for a fapiao" charade, and just put up a sign that says, "Sorry. Never ever a fapiao."

Sometimes, sit and have a drink just for getting a tipsy feeling that made me pleasant. For example,a glass of refreshing majito in rickshaw during happy hour can be well-done,meanwhile, in case worrying about my pocket.

Well, I know it's a mistake to order a salad at the Rickshaw, but I did and I can report that it was pretty bad. Granted, the portions were truly "American" but my Cobb salad was watery, the chicken dry and tough, basically one big unappetizing mess. I should have just stuck with the greasy diner stuff.

this is the only place i go to watch mlb/nfl/nba games. breakfast food is good.

Hey Dude,
This place makes a juicy burger and a mean breakfast and shows ESPN on TV. Sure, you're worried that you could acquire a venereal disease from touching their furniture ... or vomit your giant Stella from the smell of the bathroom on the first floor. But, they make good food and serve good alcohol. Even with the obnoxiously loud frat pack crowd Rickshaw attracts and fuwuyuan who have never once gotten my order right, I could love the Shaw were it not for their true Achille's heel: the music. The 24-7 Fred Durst-inspired soundtrack is enough to ruin anyone's night out. Fix the music, dudes, and I will smell your bathroom, struggle with your fuwuyuan, watch your TV and buy your burger.

ROFLMAO!

What a night! Apologies for the drunk dial!
It was an off night for everyone (myself included). Rickshaw is great; Huang Yuan is well-meaning and was just caught short-staffed.
I'll look forward to going back (in person) sometime when I'm next in town!

-
Just because you have drunk dialed my number and argued with me for half an hour in the middle of the night whether i can make you a quesadilla and deliver it to your home or not, you really shouldn't bitch that much over the rickshaw. I was about to tell you that you have the wrong number, but it was to hilarious...
Btw, in my opinion Ricksahw is okay once in a while for a beer and a bite when drunk or before and thats it...

Sorry, I forgot to rate the bar - food is good but service is terrible. Here's hoping Nick can fix this, because god knows his staff can not!

While I like the food at this bar, it has, hands down, the worst service in Beijing.
I called this bar this evening, and, admittedly, it was late - 3:15 AM, but they are purportedly a 24 hour establishment. I proceeded to request delivery to my home, which they declined - apparently GuoMao was too far away from Sanlitun.
The woman with whom I spoke, Huang Yuan, while compromising when threathened, was unwilling to budge before threats of this review. And after forty minutes of arguing who wants a quesadilla delivered, even if in thirty minutes.
Nick is a good guy, but the service at this restaurant leaves much to be desired if it is to be a genuine 24 hour home-style eatery.
As it stands right now, it is merely a come-what-may, hit or miss cantina, that may or may not be able to fulfill your request, depending on how convenient it is to the staff on hand at the time you order.
I had high hopes of higher standards, but promises of delivery premised on threats of a bad review are useless - I would rather starve.

The Shepard's pie is sometimes very good and sometimes very bad. It also gave me and 2 friends diarrhea before. Must be expired meat.

a no nonsense pub. decent food and drink. you get what you pay for. the staff at times a little patchy with the service, but always friendly and helpful.
some complain about the crowd, but hey, then go to a different place down the road! it's a drinking joint/sports bar, not a restaurant or bistro...

I remember many fun nights here last summer... tonight's not so fun. The music was too loud. The waitresses aren't familiar with the menu and the worse is... the food was terrible. The Nachos were already soggy by the time it got to our table. The bill was presented while we were still eating. In all, nowhere near the great summer nights of last year. Hope they'll improve soon. With so many new places opening, without the service and standard of food, it's easy to hop to the next new place.

I like wireless internet, happy hours, outdoor seating, and the likes of it all. The burritos are great, as is the celery and blue cheese dip, but service is bad, the coffee is on the sour side, and most importantly, after awhile, it smells like I'm drinking out of a toilet. Get that smell under control! Nuff said.

It gets a point for the cheap enough booze.

Ahh, agree with Kelvin on that one. Why is this place so crowded!!! I just moved to Beijing and this place reminds me of a pedophile dive bar......
-
-
Good enuff for an after 5 "beer-ing" session ...only 10RMB for a QingDao Draft beer (during happy hours). A typical street side pub. Pool's balls a little old... Service is acceptable. Can be very crowded(dunno why???). *Many regulars/loyal customers

I've only been for brunch and a game on Sunday morning - the game was great, as was the fact they showed it; the food was not. Talk about hapless and harried service. Their computerized ordering system seemed to have hijacked the operation for its own purposes, leaving me with bizarre and un-ordered combinations of breakfast sides. The Bloody Mary is a don't bother. Still, if they keep showing my team, I'll probably keep going!

A great place to watch the F1 GP or any other sporting event I guess. Spoke to the owner on Saturday, "can you show the F1 GP on Sunday with English commentary?"... "sure not a problem". The guacamole is fantastic (made in front of you) and the ambiance is friendly. A beer, couple of coffees, the chips and dip, a packet of local cigarettes and a smiling waitress... two and half relaxing hours and all for RMB 90. Nothing wrong with that.

I agree that Rickshaw is not the place to go because of the food. However, the ambiance is pretty nice and the crowd usually interesting. Also, drinks are relatively cheap and good. Great thing about this place is also that it seems to be constantly open - I've been there on Sundays at 2am and at the most random times during Spring festival. It was always opened, while most of the other bars weren't. One thing to keep in mind: don't go there if you intend to chat the night away, since the place is normally too loud for this. Anyway, a great place to have in Beijing.

I love 'working' from the Rickshaw
Wifi is good, food is quite good and happy hour is excellent.
It's sometimes difficult to get a table, but on the whole a nice place to eat and drink (and occasionally work)
-
-
never had problems with gettin food there quickly, then again I always order food at strange times, like midnight. the hamburger is ok, the buffalo chicken burger is big but pretty tasteless...
-
-
I always go to the Rickshaw for the guacamole, but everything else I've ever had on the menu has been mediocre. Service is off and on, the last time I went there was the most hapless waiter I'd seen in a long time, with no idea what was on the menu and a weird affinity for not wanting to take orders. He'd come and take one drink order, completely ignore the other people at the table and rush to the computer to punch it in. One of our friends didn't get his food until everyone else had finished theirs, despite our repeated requests to bring it out. If you're into the whole college scene, it's a decent place to go for drinks, but if you're looking for a good meal, head somewhere else.

I wasn't particularly impressed with their service. The waiter seemed to have no clue about the menu. I repeated 2 times what I wanted (English and Chinese) and I pointed the item out on the menu. Yet, he still managed to bring me the wrong dish.
Food was OK, but nothing fantastic.
Deco was below average and actually rather on the cheap.
There was a very annoying oil smell on their first floor which completed the whole eating experience as a negative one.
-
-
I actually had a burrito and those 'french fries' wedge things... they were the soggy things.. I have since had the buffalo burger which is ok...but generally I found the food below average...except the wings which are good!
Guess i just expected more 'pub like' portions and taste from Rickshaw
-
-
Pizza is gone. Pixienic, what did you order that is soggy? Burritos, quesadilla, wings and Buffalo burger are good... chicken pot pie is okay but needs a bit more zip.
Great spot for afternoon wireless access.
-
-
Agreeing with all the above poster's, its not the place to go for food. Flavourless and soggy is probably how I can sum up all the items.
Great for drinks, and great for pool though, but a pub just isn't a pub without the grub...
-
-
Place was packed but I got a bad pizza last night. It was completely cold in the middle. I returned it and they happily brought me another, but that one wasn't much better as the crust was sog-city. Rickshaw is hit or miss on the food, except for the gaucemole, which never fails.

I've been back a few times after the other "lukewarm" review, and I think the staff's service and knowledge of salsa has improved. I was also quite impress today when all our dishes arrived synchronized at the same time; another often forgotten value.
The sports commentators on the TV were a bit loud, and it's getting a bit too chilly to still leave the doors open, so they're not 5 stars yet ;)
-
-
10 kuai pancakes with butter and syrup. Done deal.
-
-
Gotta love the burritos, and kudos to anyplace that has the courage to put "fried Snickers" on their menu.
-
-
A rare find in Beijing. The ambiance is great. Reminds me of a street-side bar in HK.
Although they carry a similar menu to The Saddle, everything seems twice the price, and their staff seems to have no clue about any of the items on it. I spent about 10 minutes explaining what "salsa" was. Typical case of restaurant staff that seemed to have gotten no education.

the guy in the photo is amazing, nicest bar employee i have met in beijing.

Well this place is a either a hit or a miss. There are times where my cocktails have been done so well. Sometimes the waitstaff takes too long even for a tsingdao. If they have a consistent service I will be back more frequently.
