    City Weekend Says

This pub serves well mixed cocktails, imported beers and quality wines, as well as a full menu prepared by ex-hotel chefs. Vintage prints and imposing antiques adorn the high walls, giving Westside the proper ambiance to entertain Proper Center bigwigs. A deftly selected mix of bouncing club tracks inject an appropriate dose of fun.

This venue is reminiscent of an English city pub with high ceilings, dark wood and masses of pictures on the walls. Outside, the large deck area surrounded by an even larger shallow pool is a gem and perfect for enjoying the autumnal weather.

A decent selection of well priced beers and wines and a two for the price of one happy hour make this a serious alternative to nearby Centro.

Food consists of breakfasts, soups, salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes which will change regularly to keep things interesting. Currently the BBQ is running outside and turns out excellent sausages, beef skewers and steaks.

Service was extremely efficient and helpful and the servers all spoke good English.

    Pub Flub

It’s not on the west side, it’s more pub than café and that’s just the start of the confusion at this underwhelming CBD watering hole. The hardware is fine. Antique prints and paraphernalia from London’s Portobello Market adorn the high walls. A 200-year-old mirror hangs imperiously above an antique (though not functional) fireplace set. The kitchen is staffed by St. Regis refugees. But there is a hole in the middle where quality management should be, making the place feel more like a place for Prosper Center bigwigs to entertain buddies than the neighborhood drinking hole the CBD desperately needs. The drinks are fine. We dug the well-mixed, fruit-heavy Singapore Sling (¥50). There are plenty of imported beers on the menu (¥45). Oddly enough the best part is the music—everything from ‘80s new wave to slick Beck remixes. Totally inappropriate for the crowd they are trying to court, but welcome nonetheless.
