This is Beijing’s premier underground gay bar. Literally. Although its location in the basement of the Shangdu SOHO West Tower might make it tricky to find, SoBear’s friendly atmosphere and staff as well as its amazing, acrobatic pole dance performances well reward the determined searcher.
Don’t be put of by this bar’s niche, the mostly local crowd are not entirely bears, and from appearances alone you would be hard-pressed to tell what kind of bar SoBear even is (rainbow flags aside, that is). SoBear might not have a true dance floor, but a talented DJ lays down all your favorite gay-club tracks, and the bar has a good selection of snacks and juices, in addition the reasonably priced alcohol (imported beer from RMB30, cocktails from RMB50). So if you’re looking for a dance floor make-out, head to Destination; if you’re looking for a welcoming hangout spot where you can enjoy the local scene, SoBear is for you.
