This quirky Chinese dance club in Sanlitun is a great respite from the expat hordes. Beware the weak, often unpalatable drinks, but don't let that keep you away from their decent theme nights.
Salsa, Hip Hop, and Leather Underwear to Boot
This quirky Chinese dance club just south of The Den is an upbeat, carefree respite from the expat hordes swarming Tongli. But having opened only two months ago, Paw Paw still has a few kinks to work out. Wednesday’s Latin Night is a blast, as legions of Chinese salsa fanatics take the club by storm and foreigners get their first drink free. Come early, though—it starts to peter out around 11. Friday’s Hip-Hop Night also draws big crowds, but the club is nearly deserted on Saturday, except for a mystifying go-go boy gyrating on a platform in nothing but leather underwear. (He and a girl take turns.) Still, despite some major shortcomings—weak, often unpalatable drinks and a dearth of sit-down toilets among them—this club really is worth checking out. Not only does Paw Paw boast a well-designed space in a fantastic location, but it also throws what might be one of the best-attended, most enjoyable Wednesday night parties in town.
