Brainchild of film darling Ai Wan, this futuristic club takes sci-fi chic to a whole new level. House and tech beats thump on the dance floor while the sexy-funhouse lounge is stocked with eye candy, from art installations to puffy vinyl furniture. With stellar looks and serviceable cocktails, ChinaDoll always keeps the party going till dawn.

All Dolled Up

Though many of Beijing’s clubs are designed to look like the set of a sci-fi film, few pull off the aesthetic with as much artistry and amusement as ChinaDoll. Every inch of the sprawling Sanlitun space—from the sculptural cherub light fixtures to the wall-size photo transparencies of shimmering sultry forms—is custom designed. The only clue you’re not on the set of a Tsui Hark remake of Barbarella are the labels on the Qingdao bottles. Creative Director (and public face of ChinaDoll) Ai Wan collaborated with a number of established artists and designers to ensure that not one of the club’s glittery, vinyl chairs is the same. The diverse clientele delights in sharing opinions on such details: the red feather lampshade, the Disney-on-Ice waitress uniforms, the titillating, slow-motion art videos. The club’s serviceable cocktails (YY55-75), stellar shooters (YY45) and house DJ Thome Tomato’s tech and breakbeat can keep the clubbers happy until Sunday’s sunrise. ChinaDoll promises to take us into a fantasy, and in that respect it delivers in every way.

Sexy sexy sexy - I love it! Especially love the way the club unfolds, I felt like Alice in a sexy Wonderland. Great drinks and cute staff too, I will definitely be back, preferably after you fix the aircon :)

I kinda know what you mean but at the same time I like the place -- on the one hand it's too alive and colorful and on the other hand its perfect... First time I went I thought cool lounge but the music sucked and the drinks were soso; but I was there on saturday night after hopping all over town and it was the only club besides block8 with energy and pulse and people, the drinks were much improved and the music was great.

simple words ... boring ... low energy ... overrated ...

there is not even a dance floor to dance ...

its suppose to have some portrayal to hedonism but its like alice in wonderland meets the wizard of oz

now I know why your review was removed mutable you obviously have never even been to the place -- of course you are entitled to your opinion but at least get half a factoid right -- the club has a great dance floor and great music...

I went to Aiwan's birthday party last night and it was a blast -- thanks Ai, your place is a dream!

Tacky...yup, I agree it is-to a certain extend. I went on the opening nite, was quite disappointing...no music, no air-con... : ( But I like the lightings. I believe with more effort, you guys will "prosperous"! : )

Drop-Dead Gorgeous Can Make You Dance Till You Drop

If it’s dancing you came for, then it’s dancing you’ll get. It was as simple as that. Caroline D’Amore, deejay from Hollywood brought to Beijing the kind of music Beverly Hills gyrates to. With a passion, the evening had one mission, to dance. And with that, she didn’t disappoint.

With her movie star looks and supermodel stature, you’d think she were a star in Hollywood herself. She probably is, especially when she starts her playing. Everyone just gets transfixed on both her beauty and her music.

For several nights, entrance she did, at the reincarnated ChinaDoll at 3.3 Mall in Sanlitun North. As it did in its original location, the club founded by multi-talented, international award winning film producer/actress Ai Wan and haute club designer Wu Ying, once again proved it was going to be a force to reckon with in Beijing’s club scene. With a reputation for bringing the best deejays from all over, ChinaDoll flew in a Hollywood party girl this time. So, at least, for a few nights, Hollywood was on Beijing’s hazy air with all its glamour and magic.

Deejay Caroline, who plays at Opera and Crimson back home mixes a lot of new hiphop tracks with electric and dance. So what makes Caroline’s sound as stellar as the stars in Hollywood, “Because I love to dance, my music’s always high on energy, I never go down – expect a full set of straight high energy dancing.”

She makes her club crowd sweat as much as she herself does, dancing and partying with the crowd while mixing. “I’m not playing for them, I’m partying with them.” And like a preacher, she led her cult with both hands raised in the air lifting everyone’s spirit to a higher level.

She clearly delivered on her promise. There was high energy on the dance floor throughout her set. Once you step on it, there was no leaving as the music kept you at peak the entire time. The vibe was so strong in fact, that the entire ChinaDoll from all corners turned into one massive dance floor. There was no way you could escape as the high energy would force your bodies and souls to palpitate to the beat whether you were by the bar or within the confines of the VIP area.

Caroline admits the general sound back home is already in Beijing, “It’s not too different from the music played here. But sometimes, it takes some time for tracks to come here and vise versa.” She added that new music of Chris Brown and Little Wayne did take a bit longer to arrive in China’s capital.

She has admiration for ChinaDoll’s regular spinning artists, “I really like it. I like the high energy and the dance beats, that there’s no rock and roll. It’s generally the same sets.”

She was also proud to say that she brought in some music never yet heard in the Olympic city, “It’s a remix of Olivia Newton-John’s Physical turned into a house dance track by Sultan.” It’s tough to imagine the 1980’s number 1 song would ever hit 2008’s club scene. But it did and it was plain awesome.

Of ChinaDoll, DJ Caroline, who has been spinning music for the past 3 years, was completely mesmerized, “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before – a dreamland. It’s really fun. I’ve been to so many clubs in the world but I’ve never seen anything like it, interesting things everywhere, something new everywhere. It’s just so out there.”

The new ChinaDoll blends east and west in a unique fusion of art, film, music and style. “ChinaDoll is not only a place where glamour and fashion is seen, but where art and culture intertwine to build a new creative vision” Ai Wan enthuses.

The reinvented ChinaDoll is of course all that, oozing with creativity in all of its corners and walls from the floor to the ceiling. No detail was spared to make the gigantic 2,000sqm club an objet d’art. There’s a lot of interesting features and artwork but it’s clean and minimal where it should be: on the dance floor. But that’s also because its beautiful crowd is expected to bring in that detail.
