City Weekend
says

Designed, financed and managed by Beijing DJs and electronic musicians, this underground club puts music first. House, minimal tech and drum ‘n’ bass fill its black-lit rooms with booming beats. Reasonably priced Tsingtaos and mixed drinks fuel the dance floor with Cheshire-cat grins and loose inhibitions.

Wow, take the red ill indeed. It looked like the set of a George Romero film this weekend. Zombies everywhere.

I can't say I really enjoyed the Trance. Trance is what the kids listen too in between Saturday Night Fever and Minimal Tech as they grow up. But the patrons of this joint were v. cool, sophisticated and the chicks were hot. What more could you ask for. I'll be back there this Friday.

Where I go to hear what's on my ipod over a sound sytem, I can only wonder what percentage of my income has ended up as bar proceeds. Sigh, it's all for the love of underground electronica, right?

if you're into electronic music - this is the place to be in beijing for the moment. they just need to work on their ventilation system.

White Rabbit is different. This place reminds me of the anual rave in the forrest back home in Norway, which for sure is a positive remark.

That said, White rabbit suffers somewhat from (seemingly) beeing a mix of trendy and really really dopish, which I am not really used to.

The layout is actually quite cool, and looks like a 2-store basement, stripped of everything. My biggest complaint have to be the ventilation, cause I literaly smell one big sigaret after beeing there from 01.30-05.30.

As for the people, it was really nice to find a place that isn't overpacked, and people seemed more or less friendly.

Musically its psy-trance and some minimal techno. Personally I would prefer if they played some more lively music (electro-pop/D&B/Hard-dance) but thats only a preferance that I won't allow to involve my judgement.

All in all White Rabbit is a positive change to the incredibly stereotypical clublife that seems to be Beijing, and I "will" come back.

Oh dear, White Rabbit is most certainly not a psytrance-focused venue. They've been open for 6 months, and there have only been three psytrance nights there. Good lord, there is only one psytrance DJ spinning in this town!

Drum'n'bass, however, is well-represented. The Syndicate throws at least one big party per month there, my favorites being when they go head-to-head with "house mafia" BaiCai.

As for "some" minimal techno, that happens almost every night they're open. If anything, that is over-represented: most of the ten resident DJs throw either minimal, straight techno, or tech-house, and Acupuncture Records has had about a dozen nights there.

Regarding the comment that the place suffers from a mix of trendy and dopey, I'd be hard-pressed to find other bars or clubs where people weren't drinking to excess. I've had half-passed out men put their hands up my skirt at places on Gongti.

And trendy? I feel constantly out of place or underdressed at so many other venues, surrounded by patrons with their noses high in the air and some seriously snobby management. The owners of White Rabbit, on the other hand, are some of the loveliest people you'll ever meet, who go out of their way to dance and drink and talk to everyone there.

Nonetheless, the Rabbit is a place ruled by its regulars, the people who are there every weekend. Those regulars tend to have a fairly niche taste in underground electronic music (many being musicians themselves), but hard-core electronic music fans are generally rather friendly in nature anywhere you go.

As for ventilation, basements aren't the best places to feel fresh as a daisy. Nonetheless, the management is working on that.

The point: White Rabbit is the kind of place to get invested in as a repeat patron if you are really into music and good people who will always welcome you.

Fair point. Although most of the times I've been there its trance too so I can't disagree with the generalisation of the genre.

WB is great but erratic. Its best to turn up and hope to hear some good music.

I'm surprised someone put their hand up your skirt. Its not a very effective way of approaching ladies.

Favorite club in Beijing - reminds me of my beloved Panorama in Berlin.

My only beef is that a half bottle of water costs 30 yuan (Coke is 20) which is ridiculous if you plan on going all night and have already paid 80 yuan cover and need to catch a cab home later that night. Or really, that's just a ludicrously high price for bottled water. We're not talking VOSS or Evian here, either.

Didn't we figure this out in the nineties? Inadequate hydration leads to kids keeling over from heat exhaustion. And the lack of ventilation on the lower level ain't helping. On the worst nights, you end up pumping everyone's recycled air through your lungs along with a heavy dose of cigarette smoke - enough to feel the effects the next day.

Since you can't drink the tap here, you're outta luck if you're a thirsty and skint clubber. Just wait til those little X-heads start dropping like flies.

My advice: til WR drops the price of water or increases the bottle size, bring a couple full bottles from home and dance safe.

Was there again last night and someone needs to make it clear to DJ's that empty a floor. Change the tunes, tempo, style ...change anything but don't just nod away as if its good when the evidence is to the contrary. Very disappointing.

Dive down the rabbit hole and into this veritable warren of decent electronic music. Boasting 2 levels of minimally-decorated dance floor, there is plenty of room for all to move, and this is definitely the place to dance free of all inhibitions. A lack of ritzy décor focuses the entire club’s attention on the dj at hand, who could be spinning anything from minimal and tech house, to drum n bass or even electro.

The metaphoric white tarpaulin rabbit’s ears over the dj booth on the bottom level are quite cute, and simply add to the feeling that you have somehow managed to stumble across an underground rave in one of the busiest cities in the world. Despite the somewhat grotty toilets and lack of ventilation, this is definitely the club to visit if you are in need of a good dose of decent bass.

I like the music, and I have come to like the environment. What I absolutely hate is to pay 70 yuan just to get in to see if there is any people there. Saturday two weeks ago we came at half past 10, thus after opening time and waited for...3 hours with a bae minimum of people there.

If you know/want people to come at 01.00, please say that the place opens around that time, not at 22.00. This is bad for the customers, and thus bad for the club. I saw three (obviously new) chinese coming in and they turned in the door (after paying of course) when they saw no people there.

Also, if the club is open I do not like to see DJs who are just relaxing and not doing their job. That is what they can do if it is free to enter, not when I pay an abysmal 70 yuan a person no no purpose.

I won't give you a grade just yet, in case you happen to adjust.

I've stopped going. It's inconsistent. Great when it's great. A graveyard when it isn't.

Love this place, love the music, its great to know I won't hear anything commercial when I come. Door charge is a bit steep for a low-budget place like this though, should at least include a drink.

An Empty night at WR, Good music, but no reason to charge people 50rmb when there were only 10 people inside.

people! we bring the music and social lubricants, you bring the party! if your friends aren't there, call them over! if the dance floor's empty, fill it! whenever there's a door charge, the money goes to fund the artists and the drink sales pay the rent, electricity, staff, security, etc. sorry, there's no way around this as long as the currency system stays the way it is. til it changes....water is still 20 rmb. bunny love and pitbulls

When the Rabbit is hoppin', there is nothing better in Beijing. When it's quiet, you just have to chill, and the crowds will come. Try not to fall asleep on the couches.

This place annoys me more than most places, mostly because i love electronic and I keep coming back for lack of alternatives... Music is great, depending on what event/DJ, but that hasnt been an issue for me as i only go for what i like anyways. But the 50 kuai cover charge and the expensive, yet discusting drinks AND the rude and annyong staff just piss me off on a regular basis... Oh yeah and agreed with the above comment about the ventilation system... MY GOD it gets hot and stuffy in there... At least they have the patio now, where they also sell beer. That is really cool...
