Started by a dedicated backpacker turned entrepreneur, this wonderful hutong hideaway attracts locals, backpackers and foreign regulars who quaff wine while digging into excellent and reasonably-priced Italian dishes. With an outdoor courtyard covered by trellised vines a rustic, bohemian decor, and a non-smoking section, Passby is hard to, dare we say it, pass by.
This place underwent a bit of a renovation about a month ago. They expanded the outdoor patio into the thing next door whatever it was I guess a postcard shop or something. Inside they gutted some of the nooks and crannies in favor of a more open seating arrangement plus a adding a huge wall covering glass front fridge with a million different imported beers in it. Some of the old nomad flavor is gone, replaced by microbrews from around the world. Food pretty much the same though. Always solid, so long as you don't stray too far.
Passby bar is hard to miss, and it's a great hangout spot. However, food is mediocre, and prices are pretty steep. I can't deny the atmosphere is worth a visit but it would be very irresponsible of me to say the food is at all decent.
+: The food is a great value with relatively good service. After 6 years of requesting for a non-smoking area, they finally have declared a part of the restaurant is now non-smoking!
-: The restaurant badly needs a serious facelift, walls are cracking and mold can be seen on the ceiling and the walls which doesn't help the appetite. The yard with glass rooftop helped to add more space, but it also destroyed a bit of the very special and original courtyard feeling of PassBy Bar.
This is a great place to eat and drink!! Wonderful food and a fabulous atmosphere!
This is a great place to have a drink! The atmosphere is wonderful. There's seating outside and inside.
I love this restaurant. It's got a great environment and free wireless and tons of books to read while eating.
