This small Zhangjiakou area resort offers a few runs and nice scenery but is overshadowed by neighboring Duolemeidi and Wanlong. Decent equipment is available if you ask for it, and the hotel's a good option if other Chongli lodgings are all booked up.
On a scale from 0 to 20 (0 = the ski mound in Chaoyang park, 10 = Nanshan) ChangChengLing is a 7 – the hotel is the only reason to go there
ChengChengLing (长成岭GreatWall Ridge) is in ZhangJiaKou(张家口) and is the last remaining minor resort in that area as both nearby CuiYunShan and HeBeiSaiBei have closed for good; beat out by tough competition from WanLong and DuoLeMeiDi. ChangChengLing has a single advanced run that starts out gentle but gets very steep near the end, one long easy run and a narrow winding run connecting these two which, though it sounds fun, is far too sluggish to offer any thrills. The trees are a bit too thick for off-piste skiing though you could conceivably ski the powder under the lift line- just watch out for stumps, fallen trees and big rocks. Though the scenery is nice and an adjacent wind farm adds a bit of novelty, by and large, the resort is unexceptional. With Wanlong and DuoLeMeiDi nearby you wouldn’t go here to ski but you just might go for the hotel. They have a decent hotel which could serve as a fallback if other options were all booked up. A taxi ride to the other resorts will take about 40 minutes and cost RMB 80.
Prices: Rental with lift ticket is RMB200/4 hours or RMB290/day on the weekend. Expect increases on holidays.
Equipment: Just like the Beijing resorts, they assume you are a beginner and hand you some garbage skis and boots. Reject those and you’ll get Volkl skis and Tecnica boots. Limited selection of snowboards. They want your passport as an equipment deposit. The equipment area also has a few seats next to a small store where you can get snacks, drinks and complimentary hot water.
Lodge: At the no-frills restaurant you can choose from a number Chinese dishes, laid out in big stainless steel bowls, which you pay for by dish. Expect about 30 RMB per person. Upstairs is a second restaurant used for dinner and breakfast.
Hotel: There are two on-grounds hotels; the one on the left charging RMB320/night and the better one on the right charging RMB400/night. This one has ondol heating but don’t get the impression of a traditional Korean theme; it is a typical Chinese hotel room… with floor heating. No hair dryer, no cable TV, no humidifier, no WiFi but they do have wire internet connections.
In Congli (崇礼) two new hotels opened in 2009:
-
I Snow (爱雪国际酒店), 0313-461-1000 www.isnow.biz Rooms have nice amenities like humidifier, hair dryer, water dispenser, orthopedic pillows and mattress. Downstairs has a massage center and bar that converts to breakfast buffet in the morning. Prices start at RMB 688/night book ahead for discounts.
-
RongChen (容辰国际假日酒店) 0313-569-9999, 15931309923, fax: 0313-461-6666 This impressive new complex packs in a lobby bar, banquet room, KTV, Chinese and Western restaurants, foot massage, spa/bath house and a pool planed for 2011. Hotel prices start at RMB 1188/night, deluxe suites also available, book ahead for specials.
Lifts/Runs:
-
Two easy runs; one just in front of the lodge served by a disc lift and a second served by a two person chair lift that blared Mandopop at high volume.
-
One intermediate connecting the advanced and easy runs. This has a two person chairlift but it never operates.
-
One advanced run served by a quad lift, thankfully with no music.
Getting there and back:
-
Tag along with a group trip to WanLong or DuoLeMeiDi and head off on your own to ChangChengLing via a 30 minute (RMB 50) taxi ride.
-
Take the train to ZhangJiaKou South Station (张家口南站). The north station is closer to Chongli but more trains go to the south station. The trip takes 3 hours for express trains and 3.5 hours for others. Seats sell out fast but you can usually get sleepers (RMB 100) at last minute notice. Buy your return ticket immediately upon arrival and be sure to specify either the Beijing West or Main station. The 1 hour taxi ride to ChongLi (崇礼) costs RMB 100 but expect times and prices to increase if it snows.
Night skiing: No.
